Opel Astra L: X-Tomi Design imagines an Opel Astra GSi

The new Opel Astra L has only just been revealed and, even though the odds of the model ever receiving a performance-focused version look slim, that has not stopped X-Tomi Design from visualising a hypothetical Opel Astra GSi.

Opel Astra L under Stellantis and the EMP2 platform

Now part of the Stellantis Group, the latest Opel Astra is built on the newest evolution of the EMP2 platform, which it shares with its French “siblings”: the new Peugeot 308 and the DS 4.

Alongside the underpinnings, it also inherits the full engine line-up-petrol and diesel options, plus (for the first time on the German model) plug-in hybrid powertrains.

How likely is an Opel Astra GSi?

Although Opel has not released any details about developing a future Opel Astra GSi, everything suggests the chances are extremely low-if you prefer, practically non-existent. These days, the GSi badge appears only on the Opel Insignia GSi.

Even so, if it did happen, we would expect it to be able to go toe-to-toe with other hot hatches such as the Volkswagen Golf GTI, Ford Focus ST, or the Renault Mégane R.S.

X-Tomi Design’s Opel Astra GSi concept

Looking at the work produced by X-Tomi Design, several changes versus the “standard” model stand out immediately-some subtle, others far more obvious.

Up front, there is the familiar black bonnet, a styling cue that is becoming increasingly characteristic of the German brand, as seen on models such as the Opel Mokka. Matching it is a black roof, and the door mirrors are finished in black as well.

Still at the front, the bumper appears to have been completely reworked to deliver a sportier look. The main intake grille has been enlarged, while the fog lights have been replaced by two side air intakes.

On the side, the hypothetical Opel Astra GSi wears larger wheels, reminiscent of those fitted to the Opel Insignia GSi, along with a pronounced widening of the wheelarches. Between them, more muscular, eye-catching side skirts emerge-exactly the kind of detail you would expect on a performance version like this.

Potential powertrain: plug-in hybrid options

As for the engine, and allowing for a little speculation while bearing in mind the current push towards electrification-Opel is set to become 100% electric from 2028 onwards-it would not be surprising if a new, hypothetical Opel Astra GSi relied on a plug-in hybrid set-up.

When the first images of the new-generation Astra L were released, they also brought the information that the most powerful version, with 225 cv, is a plug-in hybrid-so it would not be at all unlikely for a new GSi to use that option.

Within Stellantis, there are more powerful plug-in hybrid powertrains available, such as the 300 cv unit used by the Peugeot 3008 GT HYBRID4, or the 360 cv system fitted to the Peugeot 508 PSE. However, these require four-wheel drive (with an electrified rear axle), which could mean higher costs and, as a result, a less competitive price.
