BYD Atto 2 DM-i gains plug-in hybrid version from €33,990

Originally launched as a fully electric model, the BYD Atto 2 has now gained a plug-in hybrid variant, with prices starting at €33,990.

Unlike many other plug-in hybrids, BYD’s DM-i (Dual Mode-intelligent) technology uses the Chinese B-SUV’s 1.5-litre petrol engine (98 hp) mainly as an electricity generator to recharge the 18 kWh battery. Only at higher speeds-where it operates more efficiently-does it take on a direct driving role, similar to what we see, for example, with Honda’s e:HEV hybrid system.

Alongside the Atto 2 DM-i’s combustion engine sits an electric motor, delivering a combined maximum output of 156 kW (212 hp) and 300 Nm of torque. It also promises up to 90 km of purely electric range on the combined WLTP cycle-up to 1,000 km with the petrol engine-as we have already been able to confirm:

Dimensions and design

Compared with the electric version, the Atto 2 DM-i is marginally larger, measuring 4.33 m in length (20 mm longer), 1.83 m in width and 1.675 m in height, with a 2.62 m wheelbase. Boot capacity is 425 litres, or 1,335 litres with the rear seatbacks folded down.

On the outside, the styling blends typical SUV cues with more contemporary touches: integrated LED headlamps, slim daytime running lights and a larger front grille. At the rear, a spoiler and a light bar link the tail-lamps in a “Chinese knot” shape, giving it a distinctive lighting signature.

Tech-focused, practical cabin

Inside, key highlights include an 8.8-inch digital instrument display and a 12.8-inch central screen, which brings gesture control and an AI-powered voice assistant. The centre console retains a handful of physical buttons, although none allow independent control of the climate system.

The Atto 2 DM-i also comes with Vehicle-to-Load (V2L), effectively turning the SUV into a “power bank” capable of supplying external devices, with output of up to 3.3 kW.

On the safety front, the SUV features the usual driver assistance systems, including adaptive cruise control, forward and rear collision warning, lane-keeping assistance, blind-spot detection and automatic braking at junctions.

How much does it cost?

In Portugal, the BYD Atto 2 DM-i is offered only in the higher-spec Boost trim, priced from €33,990. The brand provides an extended warranty of six years or 150,000 km for the vehicle, and eight years or 250,000 km for the battery.
