Google Maps adds Immersive Navigation and Ask Maps with Gemini

Anyone who has treated Google Maps as little more than a route planner and traffic monitor is likely to be surprised over the coming months. Google is pushing out its biggest shake-up in well over a decade: turn-by-turn guidance moves into three dimensions, the voice guidance becomes noticeably more capable, and an AI-powered by Gemini-will handle more involved questions about places, routes and things to do. The new features launch first in the United States, with a gradual rollout elsewhere afterwards.

What is fundamentally changing in Google Maps now

Google is grouping the update into two major pillars: Immersive Navigation and Ask Maps. Both are built on the Gemini models that the company has been integrating across its products.

  • Immersive Navigation: a completely new 3D view of your journey, with a realistically reconstructed environment.
  • Ask Maps: a conversational assistant inside the app that can respond to open-ended questions-not only “How do I get from A to B?”.

Google wants to ease two long-standing in-car frustrations: cluttered map views and overly rigid, unhelpful prompts that tend to add stress rather than reduce it.

In busy city driving, heavy traffic or unfamiliar areas, the goal is that drivers can grasp what is coming next more quickly-without constantly flicking their eyes between the road and the screen.

Immersive Navigation: when the map suddenly becomes three-dimensional

With Immersive Navigation, Google Maps partly moves away from the flat, abstract map style. Instead, the app rebuilds your surroundings as a 3D scene using Street View imagery and aerial photography. Gemini processes that material to create a kind of “spatial understanding” of the route.

On screen, you will see:

  • buildings, bridges and changes in elevation rendered as 3D models,
  • lanes, turn lanes and merge sections,
  • pedestrian crossings and junctions,
  • traffic lights and stop signs positioned where they actually are.

It becomes especially useful when manoeuvres get tricky. At large junctions or confusing slip roads, the map zooms in automatically. At the same time, Maps can display buildings as partially transparent so your view of the carriageway, exits and lane changes stays clear.

The app tries to show what people genuinely need: Where do I go, which lane should I be in, and what happens right after the bend?

This “smart zoom” is designed to reduce classic high-stress moments: exits that appear with little warning, unclear lane guidance, or tight inner-city junctions where it has been easy to take the wrong turning.

New voice guidance: less robotic, more everyday language

Alongside the visual overhaul, Google is also revising the voice guidance. Instructions are meant to sound more natural and provide more context. Instead of the familiar “Turn right in 300 metres”, the app might say:

“Drive past the next exit and take the one after that.”

That may sound like a small change, but in a car every split second of comprehension matters. Many drivers navigate more reliably using reference points (“left after the petrol station”) than by judging distances in metres. Google is clearly moving in that direction-supported by the improved spatial modelling of the route.

On top of that, Google says the system processes over five million traffic updates per second. Every day, it receives more than ten million reports from users-covering things like collisions, roadworks or flooding. This information feeds into routing in real time and affects how and when the app warns about hazards or delays.

Choosing routes in plain English: time, cost, stress level

Maps already offers alternative routes, but it is not always obvious which option is genuinely worth taking. With the broader update, the app will make the trade-offs much clearer:

  • Route A: quicker, but with tolls or a higher risk of congestion.
  • Route B: slightly longer, but usually smoother and more relaxed.
  • Route C: shorter and free, but with lots of traffic lights and a tight city-centre section.

Some of these signals existed before, but they were scattered and easy to miss. Going forward, users should be able to see at a glance what they are choosing: saving time, reducing costs, lowering stress-or some combination.

Ask Maps: an AI assistant for tricky questions about places

The second major component is Ask Maps, which brings Gemini into the app as a conversational partner. The concept is simple: rather than typing rigid search terms, users can talk to Google Maps as if they were speaking to a person.

Examples of requests the assistant is expected to understand include:

  • “Show me family-friendly restaurants with an outdoor terrace in Munich that are open on Sunday evening.”
  • “Plan a route through Berlin with three sunset photo spots and charging points nearby.”
  • “Which areas in Hamburg should I avoid if heavy rain is forecast tonight?”

Ask Maps combines place data, ratings, opening times, live traffic, weather information and experience reports, and turns that into a specific, easy-to-understand answer.

For anyone who already relies on voice search-such as in the car via Android Auto or via a phone mounted on a dashboard holder-this approach allows far more flexible queries. The app can suggest suitable places, routes and time windows, then keep adjusting recommendations as conditions change.

Gemini as the engine: what is happening behind the scenes

Gemini is Google’s current AI platform, designed to handle multiple data types at once: text, images, video and location information. In Maps, that mainly shows up in two areas:

  • Spatial analysis: road geometry, traffic flow, building shapes and obstacles are reconstructed from different visual sources.
  • Language understanding: open-ended user queries are interpreted, expanded and translated into concrete actions within the map.

As a result, Maps can do more than tell you where something is-it can also convey what it is like to drive there or arrive there. Think narrow old-town streets, multi-lane motorway interchanges, or gradients that may matter for e-bikes or older vehicles.

What does this mean for drivers day to day?

For people who commute daily or regularly drive in unfamiliar cities, three aspects are likely to stand out:

  • Less time looking at the screen: clearer visuals and improved voice prompts reduce the moments when your eyes are not on the road.
  • Fewer wrong turns: transparent buildings, lane markings and intelligent zooming make difficult exits and turns easier to follow.
  • More flexibility on the move: the AI assistant can suggest alternatives on the fly-for example, if car parks are full or the weather changes.

Particularly when paired with Android Auto and CarPlay, Maps could become even more of the central interface in the car. Anyone driving an older vehicle with a phone mount should still benefit visually-although it remains to be seen how effective the new 3D view will be on smaller displays.

Possible risks and open questions

More AI in the car also brings familiar criticisms back into focus. The more precisely Google analyses traffic, locations and movement patterns, the more sensitive the collected data becomes. Users should take a deliberate look at the app’s location settings and permissions.

There is also a practical concern: 3D graphics and constant background analysis may require more processing power and drain the battery faster. On older phones, or on long journeys without power, that could become noticeable. Google will no doubt optimise heavily, but technically the added convenience is not entirely “free”.

Finally, there is the question of how much people will lean on AI-driven recommendations. An assistant that suggests “suitable” neighbourhoods, routes or venues is always making a selection. If you genuinely want to discover a new city, it still helps to stay curious yourself rather than following only the paths the app proposes.

Even so, the direction seems clear: navigation is shifting from a static signpost to an ongoing conversational partner that evaluates situation, preferences and constraints in real time. With this update, Google Maps is taking a major step in that direction-and, in doing so, changing how many people will find their way around cities, on holiday or on the daily commute.
