The Concept Mercedes-Maybach EQS, unveiled at the Munich Motor Show 2021, offers a clear indication of the first electric SUV from Mercedes-Benz’s luxury division.
While the vehicle shown in Germany was still a prototype, it already appears very close to what will reach showrooms.
Finished in a striking two-tone paint scheme-its lower section "covered" in red (Zircon Red) and the upper body in black (Obsidian Black Metallic)-the concept’s most eye-catching feature is the commanding front "grille".
Even though the panel is closed, it incorporates a slim horizontal aluminium strip that links the two headlamps and carries the "Maybach" script, along with vertical elements that echo other Mercedes-Maybach models.
The Mercedes-Benz three-pointed star also takes pride of place, sitting prominently on the muscular bonnet of this 100% electric SUV.
Imposing exterior
At the front, the Concept Mercedes-Maybach EQS follows the same visual language as the rest of Mercedes-Benz’s EQ line, yet it stands out thanks to the lack of air intakes-an approach that should do wonders for this SUV’s aerodynamics.
Moving to the rear, the emphasis is almost entirely on an ultra-thin light signature: a horizontal band that spans the full width of the tailgate and continues to "stretch" towards the C-pillar.
In profile, several details draw attention, including the chrome surround around the windows, the rear spoiler that helps extend the roofline, and the Maybach logo on the C-pillar. Also notable are the 24" closed wheels, designed to optimise airflow.
Inside, the concept showcases multiple forward-looking solutions intended to mirror what we can expect from the production model. But the cabin experience begins before you even step in, because there’s no need to open any door manually: every door on the Concept Mercedes-Maybach EQS opens and closes automatically.
As standard, the Concept Mercedes-Maybach EQS is equipped with the MBUX Hyperscreen-already seen in the Mercedes-Benz EQS-which includes a 12.3" OLED display for the front passenger. The system uses a camera to detect where the passenger is looking and can even reduce brightness (to save energy) when it "feels" it is not being used.
Luxury, luxury and more luxury
The substantial centre console, finished with "rose gold" accents, is impossible to miss, as are the SUV’s four lavish armchairs. Each features a highly stylised shell combining a rose-gold surface with glossy white sections.
Even so, the real stars of this Concept Mercedes-Maybach EQS are the rear seats. These two "Executive" chairs, as Mercedes-Maybach calls them, are divided by a raised console that not only acts as an "armrest" but also has space for a… flower vase and two glasses.
This prototype points to Mercedes-Maybach’s first fully electric model, which will be built on the German brand’s EVA 2.0 platform-developed specifically for electric vehicles.
When will it arrive?
Beyond previewing the production Mercedes-Maybach EQS SUV-expected to arrive only in 2023-this concept also hints at the Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV, with production due to begin in 2022.
There is still no information about the powertrains that will drive it, but Mercedes has already confirmed that range will reach 600 km.
