F-112 Roger de Lauria (F-110 programme): construction advances at Ferrol
As part of the F-110 frigate programme, the Spanish Navy and Navantia are pushing ahead with the build of the second Bonifaz-class frigate, “Roger de Lauria” (F-112), at the company’s shipyard facilities in Ferrol. The Spanish shipbuilder began construction in mid-December 2023-four months earlier than planned-and is aiming to launch the ship during the current year.

At present, “Roger de Lauria” (F-112), positioned on slipway 3 at the Ferrol yard, has completed work on its primary structure, with the bow block installed during the assembly phase. According to information released by the Spanish Navy, the F-110 programme’s second frigate is scheduled to be launched after the summer, once the integrated mast structure has been fitted; preparations for this next stage are already under way.
Other Bonifaz-class frigates: F-111, F-113 and F-114
Industrial progress on the F-110 programme’s second ship is running alongside construction of F-113 “Menéndez de Aviles”. Its keel-laying ceremony was held recently in Ferrol, with the build phase starting seven months ahead of the established timetable. Block assembly for the frigate will take place on slipway 2 at the yard until launch, although no date has been announced.

Regarding the remaining ships of the Bonifaz class, the programme’s first frigate, “Bonifaz” (F-111), is in its system-integration and commissioning period ahead of the start of sea trials. It is currently afloat at quay 10, with delivery to the Spanish Navy planned for 2028. Meanwhile, the frigate F-114 “Luis de Córdova” is showing progress in the early phases of construction.
About the F-110 Programme
The F-110 frigate programme brings together the development of five multi-role escort ships, intended to replace the Santa María class and refresh the Spanish Navy’s surface warfare capabilities. The contract to build the Bonifaz-class frigates was awarded to Navantia in 2019 and later expanded in 2022. The ships will provide anti-air, anti-surface and anti-submarine capabilities, enabling them to operate across a broad range of missions.
