The refreshed Citroën C5 Aircross has just gone on sale in the Portuguese market, but it was on the roads around Nice, in the south of France, that we first took its “pulse”.
We drove the French SUV in the most powerful version in the range, the 225 hp combined-output plug-in hybrid, and we were impressed by how the system operates.
After this update, though, the big question remains: does the C5 Aircross still deserve its crown as the comfort king of the segment? The answer is in this video:
A retouched look inside and out
A quick glance at this Citroën C5 Aircross is enough to see that this update hasn’t radically changed it. It stays true to what we already knew from this model, but it does come with a new “face”.
The split headlamps have been dropped, making way for a new lighting signature, fresh chrome details and a very large central air intake.
At the rear, the tweaks are more subtle and mainly come down to the tail-light design, which nevertheless keeps the overall shape unchanged.
Inside, the C5 Aircross has received more noticeable updates, gaining a new dashboard with styling closer to the latest C4 and C5 X.
Key highlights include the new placement for the infotainment touchscreen, which can be 10″, and the 12.3″ digital instrument cluster.
Powertrains to suit every taste
Although it continues to place a big bet on the plug-in hybrid version-exactly the one we were able to drive in this first contact-the Citroën C5 Aircross still stands out by offering both diesel and petrol options.
The petrol engine is the familiar 1.2 PureTech three-cylinder with 130 hp, available with either a six-speed manual gearbox or an eight-speed automatic (EAT8).
The same gearbox choices apply to the diesel, the well-known 1.5 BlueHDi, also producing 130 hp.
Finally, there’s the plug-in hybrid powertrain, simply labelled Hybrid, which pairs the 1.6 PureTech petrol engine with 180 hp with an 80 kW (109 hp) electric motor, for a combined maximum of 225 hp (and 320 Nm of torque). Drive is sent exclusively to the front wheels via an eight-speed automatic gearbox (ë-EAT8).
Powering the electric motor is a 13.2 kWh battery, delivering an electric range of 55 km (WLTP cycle).
And equipment levels too…
As well as offering three distinct powertrains, the Citroën C5 Aircross is also available with six trim levels: Live Pack, Feel, Feel Pack, C-Series, Shine and Shine Pack.
Entry to the range starts with Live Pack, which “includes” the infotainment system with an 8″ touchscreen and the Safety Pack (cruise control and speed limiter with Lane Keeping Assist and Autonomous Emergency Braking).
Sitting at the top of the French SUV line-up, Shine Pack stands out with 19” alloy wheels, electrically adjustable driver’s seat, heated front seats, Highway Driver Assist (Level 2 semi-autonomous driving) and the Metropolitan Black interior ambience (grained black leather and grey leather-effect fabric on the upper part of the seats).
And the prices?
Prices for the refreshed Citroën C5 Aircross start at €31,212 for the 1.2 PureTech with manual gearbox in Live Pack trim, rising to €48,397 for the Hybrid 225 in Shine Pack.
