The 38th edition of the Car of the Year/Crystal Steering Wheel Trophy 2021 is now underway, and it will culminate in the selection of Portugal’s Car of the Year. As the country’s longest-running and most prestigious award of its kind, it naturally includes Razão Automóvel, which sits on the permanent jury. In total, the panel comprises 20 jurors representing Portugal’s leading media outlets.
As expected, the past year has also been especially demanding for the automotive industry and retail sector, largely due to the pandemic. Even so, manufacturers rose to the challenge, making this edition the most hotly contested to date.
There are 35 candidate models spread across seven categories, and 27 of them are eligible for the most sought-after prize of all: Car of the Year 2021. Which model will take over from the Toyota Corolla, winner of the 2020 edition?
Dynamic testing is already taking place in this first phase, with every aspect under scrutiny: from design to performance, from safety to price-without overlooking environmental sustainability and many other criteria.
An additional award will also be presented: the Technology and Innovation Prize. For this, the organisation will choose five innovative, technologically advanced devices that can directly benefit both driving and the driver. Jurors will assess these and then vote on them at the same time as the final ballot.
Before the overall winner is revealed, seven finalists will be selected and announced during next February. The Car of the Year and the winners of the different classes will be announced in the first half of March 2021.
