Peugeot 208 and E-208: launch timing and strategy
The third-generation Peugeot 208 was expected to be unveiled in 2026 and to represent the French supermini’s clear-cut move into electrification. However, demand for electric cars is still rising more slowly than anticipated, prompting Peugeot to push the 208’s debut back to 2027.
Instead of replacing the current model outright, Peugeot has now shifted course. Rather than ending production of today’s 208, the brand intends to keep it on sale alongside the next all-electric generation, giving customers an option if they are not yet ready to switch to an electric car. In other words, it mirrors the approach Opel has been considering for the next-generation Corsa.
Current 208 to remain on sale next to the electric model
Alain Favey, Peugeot’s chief executive, confirmed the plan in comments to Autocar: “We will continue to offer the 208 in its current configuration to serve the part of the market that is not yet ready for electric cars and will continue to need combustion or hybrid solutions”.
Until 2030… or as long as demand lasts
The current-generation Peugeot 208 is offered with a petrol engine, two mild-hybrid versions, and a fully electric variant.
According to Alain Favey, the combustion powertrains will stay in the line-up “as long as there is demand”, leaving open the possibility that they could remain on sale beyond 2030. Even so, he stressed that Peugeot’s strategy remains firmly focused on battery-electric cars.
“Our view is that demand for battery electric vehicles will grow very sharply. We believe it will continue to increase over the coming years and that is exactly where our focus will be. That is why, for us, the launch of the new E-208 is the most important event in the B-segment,” he added.
To keep it aligned with the next-generation model, the current 208 is widely expected to receive a more substantial styling update, covering both the exterior and the cabin, bringing it closer to the design identity of the future E-208.
What to expect from the future E-208?
The next Peugeot 208 is not set to be merely a new generation; it is also expected to mark a technological turning point. It is anticipated to use Stellantis’s STLA One platform, engineered primarily for electric vehicles, while remaining technically compatible with combustion powertrains.
It is tipped to deliver improved efficiency, driving ranges that could exceed 500 kilometres, a more advanced electronic architecture, over-the-air updates, and a stronger emphasis on software. Final design details are still under wraps, but it is already known that the cabin should introduce Hypersquare, Peugeot’s new steering wheel concept.
