Lancia in 2026: rallies, Ypsilon and the new Gamma

Lancia reaches 2026 at a decisive moment in its comeback. After flagging its intentions - with a refreshed identity, the new Ypsilon and the first steps in international expansion - the brand now has to move beyond promise. The time has come to demonstrate it is back for good.

The goal remains greater visibility and broader reach, pursued via two different routes. On one side, Lancia will return to rallying in 2026 with an official team in WRC2 - the discipline that has delivered the brand its greatest fame. On the other, the line-up will be crowned by a new model designed to send an unambiguous message: Lancia is a premium marque.

International expansion beyond Italy

Before anything else, the brand needs to be seen by more people. Lancia spent far too long restricted to Italy, but it now has 70 spaces across France, Spain, Belgium-Luxembourg, the Netherlands and Germany. Portugal has been left out for the moment, yet it is also part of the plan at a later stage - although no specific date has been announced.

The return to rallying is not nostalgia

A combination like this feels almost perfect: emotional, near-visceral, and responsible for some of the World Rally Championship’s most celebrated chapters. Lancia’s official return took place in January at the Monte Carlo Rally, in the WRC2 category, and the setting could hardly be more fitting - the record of 13 outright victories still belongs to Lancia.

Ypsilon Rally2 HF Integrale: a structured programme

The comeback has not come under the Delta name, true, but the Ypsilon Rally2 HF Integrale did not disappoint. This is not a nostalgia exercise; it is a properly structured programme with clear competitive ambitions, and the early signs look encouraging: 50 units have already been sold, set to compete in championships across Europe.

From stages to the road: Lancia Ypsilon HF

It is also a bet that will echo on the road - not via an HF Integrale burning hydrocarbons, but (for now) through a Lancia Ypsilon HF “burning” electrons. It delivers 280 hp with front-wheel drive, and revives the historic HF badge, for the first time ever attached to an electric model. A sign of the times…

Gamma at the top of the range

The Ypsilon is not only Lancia’s new face in rallying; it has also been the spearhead of the Italian brand’s relaunch since 2024. But more is required. Lancia’s premium ambitions demand it. In 2026, another step in that direction will come with the unveiling of the Lancia Gamma. Like the original 1976 model, it will take on the role of flagship.

Everything suggests it will adopt a fastback silhouette (two-and-a-half-box) like its predecessor, yet it is expected to position itself as a crossover rather than a saloon. It will be based on STLA Medium, the same platform used by models as varied as the DS Nº8 and the Jeep Compass, and it will be a neighbour to them in Melfi - the Italian plant where the Gamma will be built. One new detail is that it will no longer be electric-only, as hybrid powertrains will also be offered.

It will target the upper mid-size segment, where the German brands dominate. More than simply being a major sales hit, the Gamma must place Lancia on the same level as the Germans - the ultimate “trial by fire”.

2026 increasingly looks like a pivotal year for the Italian marque after years off the European radar. More than ever, it has to prove it is viable and that it has a place in today’s market.
