Volvo XC40 and EX40: another update expected for 2027

The Volvo XC40 is one of the longest-serving models in the Swedish brand’s line-up. First introduced in 2017, it quickly became one of Volvo’s best-sellers, second only to the XC60.

The range was refreshed in 2022 and, in 2024, the all-electric version adopted the EX40 name. Nine years on from its debut, you might reasonably expect an all-new generation by now. However, the spy shots accompanying this article suggest the Swedish SUV is being readied for yet another update.

Prototypes “caught” testing in Spain back this up. Even with the camouflage, it is fairly clear we are looking at an evolution of today’s model rather than a completely new vehicle.

Slightly revised exterior

The most noticeable changes appear at either end of the car-exactly the areas hidden by the camouflage. At the front, the headlights seem to switch to a flattened “T” shape, bringing them closer to the look used on Volvo’s newer launches, such as the EX60.

The front bumper also appears to be new, with a cleaner design that does away with the side air intakes and adds a more pronounced lower protection section.

At the rear, the “L”-shaped tail-lights are partially covered in an attempt to disguise revised LED signatures. Tweaks are also expected for the tailgate and the rear bumper, which should incorporate reflectors with a new design.

It has not yet been possible to see the cabin of the 2027 XC40. Alongside new materials and trim choices, it could gain a central display similar to the one used in the EX30.

Combustion engines are not going away

Under the bonnet, everything points to no fundamental changes. The 2027 Volvo XC40 is expected to retain combustion options with light electrification assistance (mild-hybrid), based on a turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol engine.

Even so, updates are anticipated because these powertrains will need to meet the Euro 7 standard, which comes into force at the end of November. There is also speculation that a plug-in hybrid variant could return in certain markets.

EX40 may end as we know it

The outlook is less clear for the all-electric versions, sold as the EX40. All signs suggest the EX40, in its current form, could be nearing the end of the line. In its place, Volvo may introduce a completely new generation built on the SPA3 platform, first used by the larger EX60.

If that happens, the next EX40 would arrive with stronger credentials in a segment that keeps expanding. These could include an 800 V architecture, charging speeds of up to 400 kW, and the new electric motors that also debuted in the EX60.

When will it arrive?

Everything indicates that this latest Volvo XC40 update will be unveiled in 2027-exactly 10 years after the Scandinavian model originally launched.

As for the EX40, the new generation could also arrive in 2027, although there is still no official confirmation.
