New Mazda CX-5: third generation arrives in Portugal

The first units of the new Mazda CX-5 have now arrived in Portugal. This is the third generation of Mazda’s best-selling model worldwide, with more than five million units sold across the previous generations - around 850,000 of them in Europe.

This latest generation keeps the familiar lines and silhouette of its predecessor, but it is larger: the wheelbase and overall length have increased by 115 mm. It now measures 4.69 m long, with a 2.815 m wheelbase, bringing it closer to SUVs in the segment above. For instance, it is only 5 shorter in length than the CX-60.

That extra size has translated into more room inside. There is additional space in the second row - and the rear doors have also grown by around 70 mm, making entry easier - while the boot now offers 583 litres of capacity, expanding to 2019 litres (381 litres more than its predecessor) with the rear seat folded in a 40:20:40 split.

More technology

The cabin is where you will find the most striking changes compared with other Mazdas. The dashboard is now dominated by a generous 15.6″ touchscreen, which houses almost all functions, including the climate controls. The instrument cluster has also become fully digital (10.25″). Key features remain accessible via buttons on the steering wheel or through voice commands.

The standout technology addition for this generation is the standard integration of the Google system - a first for a Mazda. The new CX-5 comes with Google Assistant, Google Maps and access to Google Play, with a later update planned for Google Gemini, the platform’s artificial intelligence assistant.

In terms of driver assistance systems (ADAS), the new CX-5 introduces technologies such as Driver Emergency Assist, Proactive Driver Assist and a 360° View Monitor with an underfloor view.

A single engine option

The CX-5 reaches the market with just one petrol engine: the 2.5-litre e-Skyactiv G featuring Mazda M Hybrid (24 V) technology. Contrary to the norm, it does not use a turbocharger and produces 141 cv, always paired with a six-speed automatic gearbox, and available with either front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive.
