The new Citroën C5 Aircross is not merely a light update of the outgoing model. This second generation switches to a new platform, grows in size, introduces fully electric versions, and reshapes the line-up in Portugal into four trim levels: You, Plus, Business and Max.

In this buying guide, we set out what has changed and how those changes show up in the engines, equipment and pricing.

What is the Citroën C5 Aircross?

The Citroën C5 Aircross now enters its second generation as the brand’s C-segment SUV, built on Stellantis’ STLA Medium platform. That technical foundation matters because it allows multiple powertrain types to sit within the same model range-including hybrid and fully electric options-without sacrificing cabin space.

Rather than being about size alone, this architecture is what lets the C5 Aircross suit different use cases, from city driving to longer motorway journeys, by pairing them with different mechanical set-ups.

Measuring 4.652 metres in length, 1.93 metres in width and with a 2.784-metre wheelbase, this new C5 Aircross is notably larger than before. The extra footprint translates directly into improved rear passenger room, while the boot stays at 651 litres, expanding to 1,985 litres with the seats folded.

Design and dimensions

The styling follows the underlying engineering shift and moves away from the softer, rounder surfacing of the previous generation. Up front, the design is more upright and more sharply defined, with a three-point light signature that aligns it with Citroën’s latest identity.

Overall proportions feel more balanced, helped by a 160 mm increase in length and a 60 mm wheelbase stretch compared with the model it replaces. This growth is not just cosmetic: it meaningfully improves day-to-day usability and comfort, particularly for drivers who regularly carry passengers in the second row.

The option to fit wheels up to 20 inches adds road presence, although the emphasis remains on practicality rather than styling for its own sake.

What changes on the new Citroën C5 Aircross?

The headline update is the switch in platform. Moving to STLA Medium enables the C5 Aircross to offer a fully electric version for the first time-something the previous generation did not provide.

That change also triggers a complete reshuffle of the range. In Portugal, the line-up starts with a 145 hp hybrid, adds a 213 hp electric variant, and includes a 225 hp plug-in hybrid, with a longer-range electric version already confirmed for later.

The larger body brings a genuine increase in cabin space, while the interior layout becomes noticeably more digital. This is not a minor refresh-it is a structural step forward that directly affects how the vehicle fits into everyday life.

Interior and technology

The cabin is one of the areas where the progress is most obvious. Every version comes with a 10-inch digital instrument cluster and a 13-inch vertical central display, which now houses most of the car’s key functions.

This “cascade” style screen supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth connection for two devices at the same time, DAB+ digital radio and connected services. Higher-spec models add 3D navigation and a natural voice-recognition system with ChatGPT integration, allowing more direct interaction with the infotainment.

The interior still prioritises a practical layout, keeping physical controls for essential items such as climate settings. Differences between trims are felt mainly in comfort and perceived quality, with Advanced Comfort seats offered in various configurations and adjustment levels-including electric operation, heating, ventilation and a massage function on upper versions.

Engines and range/consumption

In Portugal, the range launches with three distinct choices. The 145 hp hybrid combines a 1.2-litre turbo three-cylinder petrol engine producing 136 hp with a 28 hp electric motor integrated into a six-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox (maximum combined output is 145 hp). The battery has 0.88 kWh total capacity and is intended to cut consumption in urban use, with a claimed combined range of more than 950 km.

At the top of the initial electric offering is the Citroën ë-C5 Aircross with 213 hp (157 kW). It uses a battery with 73.7 kWh usable capacity and delivers a WLTP range of between 498 and 520 km, with stated consumption of 13.2 to 13.8 kWh/100 km. AC charging is supported up to 11 kW, while DC fast charging peaks at 160 kW, enabling a 20% to 80% recharge in around 30 minutes.

The 225 hp plug-in hybrid, fitted with a 21.5 kWh battery, offers an electric-only range close to 100 km. Also confirmed for a later stage is a 230 hp electric version with a larger-capacity battery (96.9 kWh) and a range of up to 680 km (WLTP combined cycle).

Equipment and trims

The line-up is structured around four trim levels: You, Plus, Business and Max. The separation between them goes beyond small details, reflecting the type of use each version is best suited to.

You is the entry point, covering the essentials in safety, connectivity and comfort. Plus builds on that with more onboard comfort and a more polished interior presentation. Business, aimed at professional customers, sits on a similar foundation to Plus but prioritises equipment that matters for intensive use.

Max is the most comprehensive specification and the one that concentrates the most advanced features, including 3D navigation, voice recognition with ChatGPT, a 360° camera system and Citroën Matrix LED headlights.

Regardless of trim, every C5 Aircross includes Advanced Comfort suspension with progressive hydraulic cushions, a 13-inch infotainment screen, and a core set of driver-assistance systems.

Who is this model for?

The new Citroën C5 Aircross is a logical choice for anyone wanting a family SUV and the ability to match the powertrain to their driving pattern.

The 145 hp hybrid is the most straightforward route, suited to drivers who do not want to rely on charging and who value maximum overall range. The plug-in hybrid is the middle ground for those who can use electric running day to day but still need full flexibility for longer trips. The electric version is best aligned with predictable daily use and lower running costs, while still offering sufficient range for longer journeys.

Prices in Portugal

Portuguese pricing starts at €30,490 for the Citroën C5 Aircross Hybrid 145 hp You, rising to €33,590 for Plus, €37,590 for Business and €36,590 for Max (monthly campaign valid for private customers).

The C5 Aircross Plug-in Hybrid begins at €39,000 for Plus, €41,500 for Business and €42,000 for Max (monthly campaign valid for private customers).

For the ë-C5 Aircross Electric 210 hp, prices start at €39,190 for You, then €42,290 for Plus, €44,790 for Business and €45,290 for Max (monthly campaign valid for private customers).

Citroën provides a standard three-year warranty, which can be extended to eight years or 160,000 km through the Citroën We Care programme, provided servicing is carried out within the official network. On electric models, the battery is covered for eight years or 160,000 km.
