Volkswagen ID.2 GTI: the first 100% electric GTI spotted testing

With pricing expected to start at €25,000, up to 450 km of WLTP range, Polo-like exterior dimensions and interior room worthy of a Golf, the new Volkswagen ID.2 is set to be one of the most pivotal models in the future of the Wolfsburg brand.

Crucially, this new line-up will not be limited to the standard versions. Even as the German manufacturer aims to become fully electric in the years ahead, it is now clear that the GTI badge will continue to identify the more “spicy” takes on future electric Volkswagens.

The ID.2 will be the first to wear this history-laden emblem, and we have already spotted the earliest prototypes during dynamic testing.

First 100% electric GTI

Previewed by the ID. GTI Concept, the Volkswagen ID.2 GTI will be a front-wheel-drive hot hatch that “brings back the concept of sporty driving with the character needed for everyday use”, as stated by Thomas Schäfer, the German carmaker’s Chief Executive Officer.

Under the bonnet, the ID.2 GTI will use Volkswagen’s new APP550 electric motor, producing 166 kW (226 hp). However, the GTI derivative is only the start. If 226 hp does not sound like enough, two more powerful versions are already being prepared: a confirmed ID.2 GTI Clubsport, and even an ID.2 R with four-wheel drive.

As with the “standard” ID.2, the GTI version will be built on the MEB Entry platform, which promises a maximum range of 450 km (WLTP) when fitted with the highest-capacity battery. In the sportier variants, however, this figure is expected to be slightly lower.

Although battery capacities have not yet been disclosed, the German brand has already confirmed that this model will support DC rapid charging of up to 125 kW.

What can we see?

Visually, the similarities to the ID. GTI Concept prototype are unmistakable. While the camouflage prevents us from reading the final surfacing in full, the standout points include a more athletic front bumper design, highlighted by the lower splitter and the air intakes at the outer edges.

In side profile, aside from more aggressive-looking wheels and more “muscular” side skirts, the changes compared with the “standard” Volkswagen ID.2 are not especially dramatic.

At the rear, though, it is a different story. Here, the Volkswagen ID.2 GTI distinguishes itself with a spoiler which, even if it is not as large as the one on the concept, is bigger than the item fitted to the ID.2 we saw testing a few weeks ago.

Meanwhile, the two-piece split rear diffuser looks very close to the one used on the ID. GTI Concept, giving Volkswagen’s first 100% electric GTI a sportier appearance that is in keeping with what these models have delivered over the past 50 years.

As for the cabin, everything remains tightly under wraps, which likely means we will have to wait until the unveiling of the “standard” ID.2.

When will it arrive?

The Volkswagen ID.2 will be unveiled at the Munich Motor Show in September, but specific dates for launching the GTI variant have not yet been announced.

Even so, everything suggests it should be revealed by the end of the year, with the first cars expected to reach the market in 2026.
