Mercedes-Benz G-Class Cabriolet set to return

More than a decade after the Mercedes-Benz G-Class Cabriolet first appeared, Ola Källenius, Chief Executive Officer of Mercedes-Benz, revealed last September that the open-top body style is set to make a comeback on one of the brand’s most iconic models.

“I’m more than excited to share that the open edition of the G-Class will return to virtually all markets where we are present and, for the first time, it will be launched in the USA,” he said.

First prototype images: Austria track testing

Following a very positive public response, Mercedes-Benz has now released the first images of the new G-Class Cabriolet. For the time being it remains a prototype, pictured during its initial dynamic and circuit testing in Austria.

Expected engines and technical specifications

Technical specifications have not yet been published. Even so, rumours suggest the new German off-road convertible will be based on the internal-combustion version of the G-Class rather than the electric model - which we have already tested.

If that proves correct, it would likely be offered with the same Diesel and petrol engines currently found in the line-up, while still leaving open the possibility that it could also end up being powered solely by electrons.

By comparison, the current Mercedes-Benz G-Class is sold in G 450 d and G 500 forms, with both models “powered” by a 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder engine featuring turbocharging and 48 V mild-hybrid assistance.

As the names imply, the key difference is the fuel type and, as a result, output. The G 450 d runs on Diesel and produces 367 cv and 750 Nm of torque, while the G 500 “drinks” petrol and delivers a more enticing 449 cv and 560 Nm.

In the electric version, the G-Class uses four motors - one per wheel - which together generate 432 kW (587 cv) and 1164 Nm (!). Paired with a 116 kWh battery, it claims up to 466 km of range (WLTP).

It also remains unconfirmed whether the new Mercedes-Benz G-Class Cabriolet will be offered in the legendary AMG G 63 guise, using the 4.0 V8 biturbo engine with 585 cv and 850 Nm.

G-Class Cabriolet: when does it arrive?

For now, only the first images have been shared and, according to the statement, the next phase involves taking the model to Sweden for its toughest winter testing. These trials will assess “the robustness, driving dynamics and reliability of the new model”.

Although no launch date has been confirmed, all signs point to the new G-Class Cabriolet arriving next year, potentially towards the end of the first half, ahead of the start of summer. As Mercedes-Benz has described it as a “special edition”, production is expected to be limited.

Pricing expectations

As for pricing, estimates suggest it will exceed the 148 750 euros and 175 050 euros of the currently available electric and combustion versions, respectively.
