While the car world argues over range and charging times, Stellantis has chosen a different kind of innovation: a petrol engine. The new Hurricane 4 Turbo is a 2.0-litre, four-cylinder unit producing 330 hp and 450 Nm, yet it is the technology wrapped around those numbers that really stands out.
It is hard not to think of Mark Twain’s famous line: “the reports of my death were greatly exaggerated”. It fits the internal combustion engine rather neatly - and this particular example most of all.
Making its debut in the Jeep Grand Cherokee 2026, it is set to become one of the group’s most significant engines over the coming years.
Hurricane 4 Turbo: A technology showcase
This engine replaces the GME T4 (Gasoline Medium Engine) found, for example, in the Alfa Romeo Giulia and Stelvio. It also adopts a distinctly American-style name: Hurricane 4 Turbo - matching the name used for the group’s inline six.
It keeps the same cylinder count and displacement as its predecessor, and it still relies on turbocharging, but the similarities largely end there. In its place are advanced solutions that are unusual for a high-volume four-cylinder.
The headline feature is arguably Turbulent Jet Injection (TJI), a technology with roots in Formula 1. In practical terms, each cylinder gains a small pre-combustion chamber with its own spark plug, into which a highly compressed air–fuel mixture is injected.
The resulting combustion is intended to be faster and more uniform, improving performance and efficiency. This is not the first time the idea has surfaced in a road car: it is the same approach Maserati introduced with the Nettuno, its twin-turbo V6 used in the MCPura (formerly MC20) and the GranTurismo.
As a result, there are now two spark plugs per cylinder, alongside dual fuel injection. The engine can run direct injection, port (indirect) injection, or both at once. The electronic management system decides, moment by moment, which strategy to use in order to prioritise power or efficiency.
The Hurricane 4 Turbo’s technical brief does not stop there. It features a variable-geometry turbocharger with electrically controlled vanes, enabling up to 2.4 bar of boost (35 psi) while also aiming to deliver sharp response at low revs. Stellantis claims 90% of peak torque is available from just 2600 rpm.
Engineering built to last
With this much technology and such a high specific output (165 hp/l) in a mass-produced engine - especially one launching in a large, heavy SUV like the Grand Cherokee - it is natural to wonder about reliability and long-term durability. The figures are in the same territory as the 2.0-litre in the lighter Honda Civic Type R.
Stellantis insists the groundwork has been done. Compared with the previous GME T4, the Hurricane 4 Turbo’s aluminium block has been reworked with cylinder walls that are 24% thicker and plasma-coated (said to be 10 times more wear-resistant than traditional cast-iron liners), along with larger connecting-rod journals.
The supporting systems have moved on too: a variable-displacement oil pump, an electric water pump, and a liquid-to-air cooling circuit for the intercooler, all designed with the aim of cutting mechanical losses.
The engine runs on the more efficient Miller cycle and achieves a 12:1 compression ratio. That is a high figure for a turbocharged unit - particularly with this level of power and torque (for context, Maserati’s V6 sits at 11:1) - and it serves as another indicator of the engine’s efficiency.
Ashish Dubey, the project’s chief engineer, told The Drive that the new four-cylinder was “validated over hundreds of thousands of kilometres of testing”, seeking to ease fears of fragility in an engine operating with this degree of boost.
Lower consumption, more flexibility
Stellantis says the Hurricane 4 Turbo uses 10% less fuel and delivers 20% more power than the previous 2.0-litre turbo, even though it offers an extra 50 hp versus the engine used in the Alfa Romeo models. Maserati even fitted the Ghibli with a 48 V mild-hybrid version of that engine capable of the same 330 hp, but the new unit’s technical arsenal sits on a different level.
It was also engineered from the outset to support hybrid and plug-in hybrid set-ups, which should make it a key component in Stellantis’s energy transition - paradoxically, via combustion.
The Jeep Grand Cherokee 2026 will be first in line, but Stellantis intends to roll the engine out to many more models. The initial focus will be North America, where it is expected to progressively take over from the Pentastar V6.
And it would not be surprising if the next Alfa Romeo Giulia and Stelvio - delayed to 2027 specifically to incorporate combustion powertrains - were among the most likely candidates to receive it.
In a world fixated on batteries and zero-emissions motoring, a 2.0-litre turbo producing 330 hp can sound almost heretical, and it is a reminder that the internal combustion engine still has plenty of life in it. After all, as Mark Twain might put it, the reports of the internal combustion engine’s death remain greatly exaggerated.
