It may look ready to take on a circuit or line up for a rallycross stage, but the CUPRA UrbanRebel Concept is, in fact, the Spanish brand’s statement of intent: a glimpse of where CUPRA design is heading, while also foreshadowing a new electric urban model.
It is undeniably a… rebellious take on a city car, yet CUPRA is keen to prove that electrification can still be thrilling and performance-led.
Power and performance of the CUPRA UrbanRebel Concept
If the styling delivers the drama, the numbers underpin the promise: 250 kW (340 hp) of continuous power and 320 kW (435 hp) of peak power. CUPRA says that is enough for 0–100 km/h in just 3.2 seconds.
In 2025 we will see the production model
It is unlikely that the production UrbanRebel, due in 2025, will arrive with that level of “firepower”. Even so, beneath the “racing car” look there are clear clues about what to expect from this electric urban vehicle.
The most telling detail is its footprint. Measuring 4.08 m long, 1.795 m wide and 1.444 m tall, the future electric urban model will “fit” into the B-segment, sitting below the CUPRA Born, which occupies the segment above.
Volkswagen Group platform and upcoming siblings
In that sense, the CUPRA UrbanRebel Concept joins the already announced SEAT Acandra, Skoda Elroq and Volkswagen ID.1 and ID.2. It is a spread of models tied together by the same underpinnings: a shortened version of MEB, one of the Volkswagen Group’s dedicated electric-vehicle platforms.
In other words, by the middle of the decade the Volkswagen Group will have a compact family of electric models designed to “democratise electric mobility”, as CUPRA chief executive Wayne Griffiths explains.
Design for the future
Look past the aerodynamic add-ons and the UrbanRebel Concept also points to CUPRA’s next visual language-more progressive, yet still distinctly sporty and emotional.
The new triangular light signature and the black A-pillar-giving the glass area the look of a helmet visor-are set to become CUPRA hallmarks, along with the “floating” roof. The A-pillar treatment was first seen on the Tavascan concept (due to launch in 2024).
Along the same lines, negative surfaces at the front-beneath the headlamps, creating a “shark nose” effect-and at the rear, framed above by a slim LED strip and the brand emblem, add to CUPRA’s visual DNA. On the side, the standout detail is the diagonal line that starts at the C-pillar and runs forward towards the door.
These cues are complemented by new surfaces with a more organic development, which we also first encountered on the Tavascan.
The CUPRA UrbanRebel Concept will make its first public appearance on 7 September at the Munich Motor Show (IAA Munich International Motor Show), during the pre-opening of the new CUPRA City Garage in the German city.
