Mercedes-Benz C-Class W206: prices from €48,000 and launch engines

The Mercedes-Benz C-Class W206 was unveiled around a month ago. Although it will only reach domestic dealerships in the summer, it can already be ordered from the Stuttgart-based brand. Prices start at 48 000 €.

Mercedes-Benz C-Class W206: availability and body styles

The W206 generation of the C-Class will be sold exclusively as the Limousine (saloon) and Station (estate). As previously happened with the S-Class Coupé and Cabriolet, the current Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupé and Cabriolet will not be replaced. This was confirmed by Markus Schafer, Mercedes-Benz’s Chief Operating Officer.

Engines and fuel consumption at launch

At launch, the new Mercedes-Benz C-Class range is offered as the diesel C 220 d and C 300 d, alongside the petrol C 200.

On the diesel side, the OM 654 M unit in the C 220 d produces 200 cv at 4200 rpm and 440 Nm from 1800–2800 rpm. Mercedes-Benz states average fuel consumption of 4,9–5,6 l/100 km for the saloon and 5,1–5,8 l/100 km for the estate.

In the C 300 d, the same engine is tuned to deliver 265 cv at 4200 rpm and 550 Nm between 1800–2200 rpm. Claimed average consumption is 5,0–5,6 l/100 km for the saloon and 5,1–5,8 l/100 km for the estate.

As for the only petrol option available at the start, the C 200 uses the 1,5-litre M 254 engine, producing 204 cv at 5800–6100 rpm and 300 Nm from 1800–4000 rpm. The German manufacturer quotes average fuel use of 6,3–7,2 l/100 km for the saloon and 6,5–7,4 l/100 km for the estate.

48V mild-hybrid system and 9G-Tronic transmission

Each of these Mercedes-Benz C-Class engines comes paired with a 48 V mild-hybrid system (ISG, or Integrated Starter Generator), combining a 15 kW (20 cv) electric motor with 200 Nm. Plug-in hybrid versions will follow later.

Beyond providing an extra boost in acceleration when needed, the mild-hybrid setup also enables functions such as “coasting” and energy recuperation during deceleration and braking. It also delivers noticeably smoother operation of the start/stop system.

It is worth noting that, among the versions available at launch, the C 200 is the only one that can be paired with 4MATIC, meaning it can be specified with four-wheel drive.

With the manual gearbox now gone, all models use the nine-speed 9G-Tronic automatic transmission. This unit now integrates the electric motor and its electronic management, as well as its own cooling system-an approach that not only aims to improve efficiency, but also helps save space and weight.
