Rumours surfaced earlier this year about a potential merger between Tesla and SpaceX, aimed at bringing the two companies’ synergies under one roof. While that possibility remains unconfirmed, Elon Musk’s latest remarks suggest cooperation between them is now more likely than ever.
During Tesla’s financial results presentation, the chief executive was asked how the relationship between the two firms is developing. Without endorsing any merger, Musk acknowledged that there is “increasing overlap” between Tesla and SpaceX.
Tesla and SpaceX: growing overlap
For years, the two businesses had little in common beyond sharing the same CEO. That divide is now less clear. Although they remain legally separate entities, their technological collaboration has steadily increased, bringing them closer together.
The shift is also reflected in broader knowledge-sharing, including materials engineering. As a result, the boundary between the automotive and space industries is far less distinct than it used to be-particularly because many technologies Tesla has developed for its Optimus humanoid robots and its artificial intelligence systems can be applied directly to SpaceX projects.
Shared projects: TeraFab and Digital Optimus
This convergence can be seen in initiatives such as TeraFab, focused on building infrastructure for artificial intelligence, as well as the shared use of computing infrastructure for the Digital Optimus project.
Hard to implement
Musk was also explicit that bringing the two companies together would not be straightforward and would need to follow the proper procedures. Even so, he declined to discuss any prospective merger in detail, saying it is a matter that would need to be handled “through the proper process”.
That stance was echoed by Tesla’s General Counsel, Brandon Ehrhart. Without directly addressing the idea of a merger, he said SpaceX remains “an excellent partner”. What closer collaboration could enable
Although Elon Musk has not confirmed any official plan for corporate integration, the increasing closeness between Tesla and SpaceX continues to fuel speculation about an even stronger partnership.
Even without an official merger plan, a tighter relationship between Tesla and SpaceX could create new technological synergies. Among the scenarios Musk has already mentioned are using Optimus humanoid robots on future Starship missions to the Moon or Mars, as well as drawing on Tesla’s energy storage solutions to support SpaceX infrastructure.
