Final Honda NSX Type S revealed at Monterey Car Week

The final NSX has just been unveiled at Monterey Car Week. The Honda NSX Type S (badged as Acura in North America) adopts a more aggressive look and is billed as the quickest NSX ever, as well as the strongest performer dynamically.

Limited production and allocations

Production will be capped at 350 units (with 300 reserved for the American market, 30 for Japan and 20 for the rest of the world). These will also be the last cars to leave Acura’s production line in Marysville, Ohio (USA).

Honda NSX Type S exterior design

Visually, the changes versus other NSX models are immediately obvious and go well beyond the various Type S badges. Both the front and rear have been significantly reworked for aerodynamic reasons and to improve cooling.

The nose is redesigned, featuring larger air intakes along with a new spoiler. At the back, the eye is drawn to a new, more pronounced rear diffuser inspired by the competition NSX GT3.

In profile, there are new forged wheels wrapped in Type S-specific Pirelli P Zero tyres, sized 245/35 ZR19 at the front and 305/30 ZR20 at the rear. This increases the front track by 10 mm and the rear track by 20 mm.

To finish, the NSX Type S comes as standard with a carbon-fibre roof, which is intended to lower the sports car’s centre of gravity.

More power, torque and performance

Under the skin is where the remaining updates are concentrated. The hybrid powertrain-built around a 3.5-litre twin-turbo V6 (with an unusual 75º bank angle) and three electric motors (Sport Hybrid SH-AWD)-has been revised to deliver higher power and torque.

The V6 gains new turbochargers running higher boost (16,1 psi versus the previous 15,2 psi), sourced directly from the NSX GT3 Evo. It also receives new fuel injectors (with 25% higher flow) and new intercoolers (able to dissipate 15% more heat). With these changes, the 3.5 twin-turbo V6 now produces 527 cv (520 hp) and 600 Nm of torque, instead of the 507 cv (507 hp) and 550 Nm delivered by other NSX versions.

The electric side provides the remaining output figures. As a result, the new NSX Type S achieves a combined maximum of 608 cv (600 hp) and a combined peak torque of 667 Nm-an increase of 27 cv and 22 Nm, respectively, compared with before.

The electrical system has also been updated. The Intelligent Power Unit (IPU), which supplies energy to the electric motors, now uses a battery with 10% more total capacity and 20% more usable capacity. This not only supports stronger performance, but also enables longer stretches of electric-only driving.

The two electric motors (Twin Motor Unit, or TMU) serving the front axle and delivering torque vectoring now feature a reduction gear with a 20% shorter ratio: it changes from 8,050:1 to 10,382:1. The aim is to sharpen launches.

Drive still goes through a nine-speed dual-clutch transmission, but it hasn’t been left untouched. Shifts are now quicker (by up to 50%, depending on the mode) and it introduces a new feature called Rapid Downshift Mode.

In practice, this allows the gearbox to “skip” multiple ratios when you need to slow down, rather than stepping down one gear at a time using the paddles. Hold the paddle for 0,6s and the transmission automatically selects the lowest possible gear for the speed you’re travelling at.

Acura/Honda have not yet published figures for acceleration gains or top speed-however, it is known to be 2s quicker around Suzuka than the “normal” NSX. The expected performance uplift is further supported by an upgraded Brembo braking system, now with six-piston front calipers and four-piston rear calipers, finished in red as standard.

Less weight, as an option

Finally, the NSX Type S offers an optional Lightweight Package, which claims to cut the hybrid sports car’s mass by 26,2 kg.

This consists of carbon-ceramic brakes and multiple carbon-fibre parts, including the engine cover and interior trim pieces.

In the USA, the new NSX Type S (sold exclusively as an Acura there) starts at $169 500, roughly €143 700.
