The compact electric SUV market is becoming more cut-throat by the month, and pricing makes that clear. The new Skoda Epiq is arriving in Portugal from 28 825 euros, putting it among the most budget-friendly options in its class. Below it, only the Citroën ë-C3 Aircross undercuts the price, starting at 26 640 euros.
Measuring 4.10 metres long, Skoda’s new SUV sits in the B-SUV segment and comes in three versions: 35, 40 and 55. The entry-level Epiq 35 uses an 85 kW (116 cv) electric motor paired with a 37 kWh LFP battery, delivering a range of up to 310 km (WLTP).
Above that sit the 40 and 55 versions, offering up to 99 kW (135 cv) with a 37 kWh battery, and 155 kW (211 cv) with a 52 kWh battery, respectively. On range, the Epiq line-up can reach up to 440 km.
So, does the lowest price automatically equal the smartest buy? To see where the Czech model lands, we’ve gathered nine alternatives priced under 35 thousand euros and looked at what each rival brings to the table.
Citroën ë-C3 Aircross - from 26 640 euros
The Citroën ë-C3 Aircross stands out for comfort and roominess, helped by a 460-litre boot - one of the largest in this group - which suits buyers with more family-focused needs.
The entry version, available from 26 640 euros, pairs a 44 kWh battery with an 83 kW (113 cv) electric motor, for up to 307 km (WLTP). Opting for the 54 kWh battery lifts range to 400 km and the price to 28 490 euros. It is also one of the few models here offered not only as an EV, but also with hybrid and petrol-only powertrains.
Leapmotor B10 - from 29 285 euros
Leapmotor’s B10 arrived in Portugal at the end of last year with prices starting at 29 285 euros. At 4.515 m long, 1.885 m wide and 1.655 m tall, with a 2.735 m wheelbase, it is sold with two battery options: 56.2 kWh (Pro) and 67.1 kWh (Pro Max). WLTP range varies accordingly, between 361 km and 434 km.
Whichever battery you choose, the motor is unchanged: 160 kW (218 cv) and 240 Nm of torque. That makes it one of the more powerful entries in this set, on a par with the MINI Aceman, though still behind the MG S5.
Renault 4 E-tech - from 29 747 euros
Following the 5 E-Tech, Renault is continuing its push to revive familiar icons, and the new 4 E-Tech is the latest example. Beyond styling that nods to the original, versatility is a key selling point, with up to 1 149 litres of load space when the rear seats are folded.
Two power outputs are offered - 120 cv (88 kW) and 150 cv (110 kW) - alongside two NMC batteries: 40 kWh (up to 309 km of range) and 52 kWh (up to 408 km), both on the WLTP cycle. For under 35 thousand euros, buyers can access the Evolution trim with either power level.
Opel Frontera - from 30 490 euros
The Opel Frontera positions itself as one of the segment’s more affordable choices - it is available for under 35 thousand euros - and the range also includes versions with combustion engines.
In electric form, the Frontera combines an 83 kW (113 cv) motor with a 44 kWh LFP (lithium iron phosphate) battery - a chemistry used by only a few models in this list - for up to 305 km of WLTP combined range.
If you want a roomy SUV mainly for short journeys, this could fit the brief. With a length of 4.385 m, the new Frontera offers a 460-litre boot. Both trims - Edition and GS - remain available below 35 thousand euros.
BYD Atto 2 - from 31 497 euros
Right now, the BYD Atto 2 is the brand’s most accessible electric SUV in Portugal. It is sold with a single electric motor rated at 130 kW (177 cv), while the 45.12 kWh battery delivers 312 km of WLTP combined range and can stretch to 463 km in urban driving.
Two equipment levels are offered - Active and Boost - and both sit below 35 thousand euros.
MG S5 - from 33 319 euros
The MG S5 is one of the company’s key plays in the electric SUV space, replacing the ZS EV on an all-new platform: MSP (Modular Scalable Platform), shared with the MG4. Compared with its predecessor, the change is substantial: at 4.476 m long, the S5 is 15.3 cm longer than the ZS EV.
The range is split across two versions and two batteries with different chemistries. The Standard version uses a 125 kW (170 cv) motor producing 250 Nm, matched to a 49 kWh LFP battery for up to 340 km (WLTP).
Long Range increases output to 170 kW (231 cv) and 350 Nm, with a 64 kWh NMC battery and a claimed range of up to 480 km (WLTP). Prices rise to 39 990 euros in Luxury trim.
Jaecoo 5 - from 33 900 euros
Jaecoo arrived in Portugal at the end of last year with two models: the 7, offered with plug-in hybrid powertrains, and the 5, which is fully electric. The Jaecoo 5 is available in two trims - Pure and Exclusive - with the top version adding features such as electrically adjustable seats, a powered tailgate and tinted rear windows, among others.
Both trims share the same drivetrain: a 155 kW (211 cv) motor delivering 288 Nm of torque, supplied by a 60.9 kWh battery. Range is up to 402 km (WLTP), placing it among the longer-range SUVs in this set.
FIAT 600e - from 34 000 euros
The FIAT 600e is no longer a brand-new arrival - it launched in 2023 - but it remains a relevant contender in the segment. At 4.17 m long with a 385-litre boot, it marked the Italian brand’s return to the B segment.
Built on the e-CMP2 platform shared with the Jeep Avenger, it features a 156 cv electric motor and a 54 kWh battery, with a type-approved range of up to 406 km on the WLTP cycle (the highest on this list). Beyond the EV, it is also available with hybrid powertrains.
MINI Aceman - from 34 124 euros
Just over four metres in length and with seating for five, the MINI Aceman competes in the B segment while leaning into a premium feel that rivals seldom match. Boot space is 300 litres, expanding to 1500 litres with the rear seats folded.
Two versions are offered. The Aceman E comes with a 135 kW (184 cv) motor producing 290 Nm, plus a 42.5 kWh battery for up to 310 km (WLTP). Top speed is 160 km/h and it accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.9 seconds.
The Aceman SE steps up to 160 kW (218 cv) and 330 Nm, with a 54.2 kWh battery and a quoted range of up to 406 km (WLTP), reaching 100 km/h in 7.1 seconds.
