Taking to the stage at the Chengdu Motor Show in China, Kia has just introduced the newest member of its all-electric line-up: the EV5.
In terms of styling, it comes across like a scaled-down EV9, with the same bold stance. The look follows Kia’s “Opposites United” design philosophy, combining crisp, pronounced lines with solid, muscular proportions.
Up front, the EV5 features a digital take on the (now) “Tiger face”, defined by the lack of a traditional grille (which an electric car simply doesn’t need). Its new LED light signature uses a pattern inspired by certain star constellations.
Interior also takes cues from the EV9
Inside the new Kia EV5, the EV9 influence is just as obvious as it is on the outside. The layout is clean and pared back, and Kia is promising high-quality materials alongside generous space-its overall size isn’t far off that of the Sportage.
From the front seats, you look out onto two horizontal displays: one for the instrument cluster and another, centrally positioned, for infotainment. Climate control is still operated via physical buttons.
Also up front, the Kia EV5 has moved the transmission selector to the steering column. This change allows a reshaped front passenger seat design that extends towards the centre console, creating a more lounge-like feel.
What we already know about the Kia EV5
Kia says fuller technical details for the new Kia EV5 will only be shared closer to its official launch. However, as ever, the internet has filled in some gaps.
According to patent records filed with China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), the Kia EV5 measures 4615 mm in length, 1875 mm in width and 1715 mm in height, with a 2750 mm wheelbase. As for weight, the EV5 is expected to be around 1870 kg.
As you’d expect, the new Kia EV5 is likely to be based on the 800 V E-GMP platform-the same architecture used by the EV6 and EV9.
Power is said to come from an electric motor producing 160 kW (218 cv) and 310 Nm of torque. To supply the system, a BYD Blade Battery (LFP) is listed, but only for the Chinese market.
For other regions, Korean Car Blog suggests a potential 82 kWh NCM battery, which could deliver a maximum range of around 600 km.
In that scenario, there is even the possibility of a 400 V electrical system instead of 800 V, with the aim of making the Kia EV5 more affordable.
When does it arrive?
Kia states the new EV5 will reach the market later this year, but only in China-where it will be built-and in “other selected markets”.
Later on, all signs point to the Kia EV5 also coming to Europe-potential rivals could include the new Ford Explorer, for instance. Even so, final specifications for each market will only be confirmed at a later date.
