Toyota has now refreshed the Corolla and has already outlined every change this model will receive in Europe, where it will only arrive at the beginning of 2023.
Launched around four years ago, the current Corolla generation was due for a few updates, and that is exactly what the Japanese brand has delivered with this facelift.
There are subtle styling tweaks, upgraded interior finishes, a stronger digital experience on board, and more power for the hybrid powertrains.
Refreshed looks
With this update, Toyota has given the Corolla a cleaner, more dynamic exterior, thanks to a new pattern for the front grille, redesigned fog lights and wheels with new designs.
On top of that, the better-equipped versions of the hatchback and the Sports Tourer estate now also come with new bi-LED headlights and the option of an adaptive high-beam lighting system.
Three new colours are also available: Juniper Blue (first seen on the Aygo X), Teal Blue and Metallic Grey.
A more sophisticated cabin
It is in the cabin that the current Corolla generation was beginning to show its age the most, so this is where Toyota has focused much of its attention for this update.
The trims are new and enhance the sense of comfort and quality on board, the fresh patterns add a more premium feel, and the new screens reshape the car’s digital experience.
Upgraded technology
As well as gaining the option of remote updates (over the air), the updated Toyota Corolla now features a 10.5” central multimedia screen - with smartphone integration - and a 12.3” instrument cluster that can be set to four different themes: Casual, Smart, Sport and Tough.
The updated Corolla also includes a voice assistant that can operate the multimedia system and several other vehicle functions (including opening or closing the windows). It is now equipped with Toyota T-Mate too, giving this model a very broad range of active driver-assistance systems.
GR Sport also gets a touch-up
The Corolla GR Sport has also had its sporty look sharpened, adding new 18” machined alloy wheels and a completely redesigned rear diffuser.
Inside, the highlights include the GR logo embossed on the headrest and a new hexagon-based decorative pattern.
Gazoo Racing lettering is also featured on the start button.
More powerful hybrids
The refreshed Corolla will only be offered with 1.8 and 2.0 l hybrid engines, and both have received minor changes to the engine and electrical system that bring more power and sharper response.
Combined output for the 1.8 l hybrid is now 140 hp (previously 122 hp), enabling 0 to 100 km/h in 9.2s (-1.7s). The 2.0-litre hybrid increases output to 196 hp (previously 184 hp) and cuts the 0–100 km/h sprint to 7.5s (-0.4s).
The power control unit (PCU) and the hybrid transmission have been redesigned, and the lithium-ion battery is up to 18 kg lighter (depending on the powertrain). It is smaller, yet more powerful.
In addition, Toyota says powertrain noise has been reduced, and that acceleration is now less linear and more natural, better reflecting driver intent and throttle use.
When will it arrive?
As mentioned above, the new Toyota Corolla - in its three versions: hatchback, Sports Tourer and saloon - will only reach the Portuguese market in the first quarter of next year. For now, prices are not yet known.
