Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace gets its long-awaited refresh

It was only a matter of time. After the Tiguan, the more family-focused version with up to seven seats - the Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace - is now being refreshed as well.

On the outside, the updates are subtle and mirror what we have already seen on the Tiguan. At the front, there is a redesigned grille, new LED headlights (inspired by those on the Golf) featuring IQ Light technology, plus a slim LED strip that runs across the entire nose.

At the rear, the Tiguan lettering has been moved to sit beneath the Volkswagen badge, and there are also new tail-lights. Interestingly, the new Tiguan Allspace is 22 mm longer than the pre-facelift version.

Interior with fewer buttons

Inside, the biggest change is the gradual removal of physical controls, replaced by touch-sensitive inputs that are becoming the norm across Volkswagen Group models.

The steering wheel is new too, matching the one used in the latest Golf. Also in the cabin, there is a new (optional) audio system developed in partnership with Harman Kardon, along with a new infotainment system (MIB3) compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto via wireless.

Sticking with Diesel, but no R or plug-in hybrid version

For the first time, the Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace comes with IQ.DRIVE Travel Assist, enabling semi-autonomous driving. It can manage steering, braking and acceleration from 0 km/h (on automatic gearbox versions) and 30 km/h (on manual gearbox versions) up to 210 km/h.

As for engines, the petrol line-up starts with the 1.5 TSI producing 150 cv, sending power to the front wheels through either a six-speed manual gearbox or a seven-speed DSG.

Above that sits the 2.0 TSI with two power outputs - 190 cv or 245 cv - and it is always paired with 4Motion all-wheel drive and a seven-speed DSG.

Finally, on the Diesel side, the Tiguan Allspace continues with the 2.0 TDI in two outputs: 150 cv or 200 cv. In the former case you can choose front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, while in the latter the power is delivered exclusively to all four wheels.

To close, both the sporty R version and the plug-in hybrid that were added to the refreshed Volkswagen Tiguan will not be offered on the Tiguan Allspace.

When does it arrive?

For now, details for the Portuguese market remain limited. For Germany, Volkswagen has confirmed the Tiguan Allspace range will be offered in four trim levels: Tiguan (base), Life, Elegance and R-Line.

Although pricing has not yet been announced, the Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace is expected to open for pre-orders later this month, with the first units delivered in October across the main European markets.
