If you think the 911 GT3 RS is impressive, wait until you get a look at the new Porsche 911 GT2 RS. The model has already been “spotted” undergoing dynamic testing at the Nürburgring in Germany.

Although it’s carefully disguised using GT3 RS bodywork, photographers at the legendary German circuit quickly noticed something didn’t add up: the engine note didn’t resemble the GT3 RS’s naturally aspirated unit, sounding far more like a turbocharged powerplant.

All signs therefore point to this being our first glimpse of the next-generation Porsche 911 GT2 RS, which is expected to reach the market only towards the end of 2025.

What will change?

Putting aside the fact that this prototype is hiding beneath a GT3 RS test mule, a handful of visual tweaks still stand out. The side air intakes appear slightly reworked, there seems to be an addition around the rear bumper area, and there’s a twin central exhaust outlet - which is fake.

Yes, that’s right: the future 911 GT2 RS should feature two exhaust tips positioned further outboard, sitting between the sizeable rear diffuser and the bumper, as can be made out in this image.

As mentioned earlier, the new-generation Porsche 911 GT2 RS is only expected to go on sale in late 2025, meaning this test car is still at a very early stage of development.

“Super hybrid” on the way?

Even so, rumours are already circulating that this model will adopt a hybrid set-up producing more than 700 cv, thereby eclipsing the previous GT2 RS (which had exactly 700 cv).

According to Autocar in the UK, the hybrid system will be derived from the technology used in the new Porsche 963 LMDh race car. It will pair the combustion engine with a small battery and an electric motor, which is expected to be integrated into the gearbox.

At the heart of this package will be the 911 Turbo S’s 3.8 l twin-turbo boxer engine, which makes 650 cv - so extracting more than 700 cv from the overall system should be relatively straightforward.

On top of that, it goes without saying Porsche’s aim is to better the previous-generation GT2 RS’s performance, which already quoted astonishing figures: 2,8s from 0 to 100 km/h and a 340 km/h top speed.

And it’s not just about beating its predecessor in a straight line, but also through the bends. The 991-generation 911 GT2 RS is among the quickest production cars around the “Green Hell” - with a 6min43,30s lap time when fitted with the Manthey Performance Kit - and it has only been surpassed recently by the Mercedes-AMG One.
