Hyundai IONIQ 5: the first model of the new IONIQ sub-brand

As electric models arrive in force, car makers are taking different approaches to naming. Some simply add an “e” to an existing badge (the Citroën ë-C4, for instance), while others launch dedicated model families such as Volkswagen I.D. or Mercedes-Benz EQ. Hyundai has taken the latter route, elevating IONIQ to sub-brand status with bespoke products. The first of these is the IONIQ 5.

Until now, IONIQ referred to Hyundai’s alternative-powertrain model offered with hybrid and fully electric versions. From this point on, it becomes the starting point for a new Hyundai sub-brand.

Wonhong Cho, Global Marketing Director at Hyundai Motor Company, says that “with the IONIQ 5 we want to change the paradigm of the customer experience with our cars so that they integrate seamlessly into digitally connected life and within an ecologically correct context”.

The IONIQ 5 is a mid-size electric crossover built on the new, dedicated E-GMP (Electric Global Modular Platform) and it features 800 V (Volts) charging architecture. It is also the opening act in a line-up of new vehicles that will be identified using numbers.

Positioned as a direct rival to cars such as the Volkswagen ID.4 and the Audi Q4 e-tron, the IONIQ 5 draws heavily from the 45 concept car first shown globally at the 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show, itself a tribute to the 1975 Hyundai Pony Coupé Concept.

Pixel-led design and a more premium Hyundai feel

This first IONIQ model aims to win recognition not only for its electric drivetrain technology, but also for a design language influenced by screen pixels. The pixel-style front and rear lamps are intended to signal the advanced digital technology underpinning the car.

The bodywork stands out for the unusually long, clean panel surfaces and for tighter, fewer shut lines, creating a more upmarket impression than has typically been associated with Hyundai. Beyond the visual link to the Pony’s styling DNA, “the interior also stands out with the purpose of redefining the relationship between the car and its users”, explains SangYup Lee, Executive Vice-President and Head of Hyundai Global Design Center.

Up to 500 km of range

The IONIQ 5 is available with either rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. The two entry-level, two-wheel-drive versions come in two power outputs: 170 PS or 218 PS, and both deliver 350 Nm of maximum torque. The all-wheel-drive model adds a second electric motor on the front axle, combining 235 PS with a total system output of 306 PS and 605 Nm.

Top speed is 185 km/h for every variant. Two battery packs are offered: 58 kWh and 72.6 kWh, with the larger unit enabling a driving range of up to 500 km.

Thanks to its 800 V system, the IONIQ 5 can add a further 100 km of driving range in just five minutes when connected to the most powerful chargers. And, with bidirectional charging capability, the user can also power external devices using 110 V or 220 V alternating current (AC).

As is typical of electric vehicles, the wheelbase is extremely long-three metres-relative to the overall length, which greatly benefits cabin space.

Slim front seatbacks further boost rear legroom, and second-row passengers can slide the seat forwards or backwards along a 14 cm rail. Likewise, the optional panoramic roof can flood the cabin with light (and, as an extra, a solar panel can be purchased to fit on the roof to help add kilometres of range).

Both the instrument display and the central infotainment screen measure 12.25” and sit side by side like two horizontal tablets. Boot capacity is 540 litres (one of the largest in the segment) and can be expanded to 1600 litres by folding the rear seatbacks, which feature a 40:60 split.

More IONIQ on the way

In 2022, the IONIQ 5 will be joined by the IONIQ 6, a saloon with very flowing lines based on the Prophecy concept car. Under the current plan, a large SUV is due to follow at the start of 2024.
