Unveiled around two weeks ago, the new Peugeot 308 has entered its third generation with its most upmarket look yet and even bigger ambitions. With more than 7 million units sold, the 308 remains one of Peugeot’s most important models.
Peugeot 308: hybrid options from launch
When it reaches showrooms in a few months’ time - all signs point to deliveries starting in the main markets from May - the 308 will be offered straight away with two plug-in hybrid powertrains. Even so, the model’s electrification story does not stop there.
Peugeot e-308: fully electric version planned for 2023
The biggest surprise in the range will be a fully electric Peugeot 308, expected to arrive in 2023 to take on the Volkswagen ID.3, which Guilherme Costa has already tested on video. This has been confirmed from within Peugeot itself.
It began with Agnès Tesson-Faget, product director for the new 308, telling Auto-Moto that an electric 308 was in the pipeline. It was then backed up by Linda Jackson, Peugeot’s Chief Executive Officer, who confirmed to L’Argus in an interview that a 100% electric 308 derivative would be coming in 2023.
Automotive News has since echoed the report, reinforcing what had already been suggested and quoting a spokesperson for the French manufacturer who said that “it is still early” to discuss the specifics of this version, including which platform it will be built on.
Platforms under consideration for the all-electric 308
For now, the technical specification of the all-electric 308 - likely to be called the e-308 - remains unknown, and the architecture beneath it is one of the largest question marks. The new 308 uses the EMP2 platform for compact and mid-size models, which supports plug-in hybrid electrification only, meaning a 100% electric version would need to sit on a different platform designed for that solution.
One possibility is the CMP platform, which underpins models including the Peugeot 208 and e-208, as it can accommodate diesel, petrol and electric drivetrains. Even so, the most likely scenario is that this fully electric 308 will adopt the upcoming eVMP architecture - Electric Vehicle Modular Platform - a dedicated 100% electric platform due to debut with the next-generation Peugeot 3008, itself scheduled to launch in 2023.
What do we know about eVMP?
With storage capacity of 50 kWh per metre between the axles, the eVMP platform will be able to take battery packs ranging from 60–100 kWh. Its layout has also been optimised to use the entire floor area to house the batteries.
As for range, the latest information indicates that models using this platform should deliver between 400 and 650 km (WLTP cycle), depending on their size.
