New Tesla Model Y Standard Long Range rear-wheel drive revealed

Only a few months have passed since Tesla introduced the Model Y Standard - a simpler, less well-equipped and more affordable take on the American SUV. The brand has now pushed that low-cost approach further by unveiling the Tesla Model Y Standard Long Range rear-wheel drive, which becomes the longest-range Model Y in the line-up.

Range comparison across the Model Y range

As the name suggests, this is the extended-range version of the cheapest Model Y, delivering up to 657 km on the WLTP cycle. Compared with other versions, it adds 123 km between charges versus the Model Y Standard, and 35 km more than the rear-wheel-drive Model Y Premium.

Price and availability

With deliveries due to start next February, the new Tesla Model Y Standard Long Range rear-wheel drive can already be ordered, with prices from 46 990 euros - seven thousand euros more than the Standard version.

Within the Model Y range, it offers the greatest driving range while still undercutting the rear-wheel-drive Premium by 3000 euros, and coming in 6000 euros below the all-wheel-drive Premium. That said, the extra range comes with some compromises.

What changes?

The Model Y Standard Long Range is, in essence, the arrival of a longer-range variant. Visually, that means nothing changes: as with the base Standard version, it does without the front LED light bar, uses specific body panels and, at the back, replaces the full-width light strip with simpler rear lamps.

It also gains new wheels called Aperture - smaller (18″) items featuring new black plastic covers designed to maximise efficiency and aerodynamics.

The biggest differences are inside. Here, too, the Model Y Standard Long Range loses the panoramic roof. The synthetic leather seats with electric adjustment, heating and ventilation are swapped for fabric seats that are manually adjusted and have no ventilation.

On top of that, the steering wheel no longer has electric adjustment, the 8″ touchscreen for the second row has been removed, and the audio system drops from 15 to 7 speakers.

The most efficient Model Y yet

The new Tesla Model Y Standard Long Range rear-wheel drive uses a single electric motor on the rear axle producing 220 kW (299 hp), powered by a larger 75 kWh battery.

The outcome is the longest range in the line-up - up to 657 km (WLTP) - helped by it being the most efficient Model Y to date, with a claimed consumption figure of just 12,7 kWh/100 km.

Deliveries of the American SUV will begin next February, with prices starting at 46 990 euros. Here is how the range is made up:
