Unveiled around three years ago at the Geneva Motor Show, the Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupé arrived with a striking look and the promise of extra space and greater day-to-day flexibility. It has now received its first update.

Exterior design updates for the Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupé

From a styling perspective, there are no headline design changes to note; instead, the updates focus on a broader range of styling choices (such as paint colours and wheels) and the introduction of new components.

One key change is that the Panamericana grille - increasingly a signature of AMG-badged models - and the huge air intakes in the front bumper are now available on the six-cylinder versions, the AMG GT 43 and AMG GT 53.

New packs, wheels and paint finishes

These versions can also be specified with the optional AMG Night Package II, which “offers” a darkened finish for components that are normally chrome as standard, including the brand’s iconic three-pointed star and the model designation.

This pack can also be paired with the exclusive Carbon Pack, which heightens the car’s aggressive character with carbon-fibre elements.

Also on the options list are new 20” and 21” wheels with 10 spokes and 5 spokes, respectively, along with three new body colours: Starling Blue Metallic, Starling Blue Magno and Cashmere White Magno.

On the outside, another notable addition is the option of red-painted brake calipers for the six-cylinder models.

Cabin changes: steering wheel, trim and a fifth seat

Inside, the most immediately obvious change is the new AMG Performance multifunction steering wheel with haptic controls, although there are also fresh trim designs for the seats and for the door panels and dashboard. The biggest improvement, however, is the option of an additional seat in the rear bench, increasing this saloon’s capacity from four to five occupants.

Two powertrains… for now

When it reaches the market - in August - the updated Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupé will be offered in two versions, both using a 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder petrol engine.

The AMG GT 43 produces 367 cv and 500 Nm and is paired with a nine-speed AMG SPEEDSHIFT TCT 9G automatic gearbox and a 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system. With this set-up, this AMG GT sprints from 0 to 100 km/h in 4,9s and has a top speed limited to 270 km/h.

Meanwhile, the AMG GT 53 - which uses the same transmission and all-wheel-drive system - delivers 435 cv and 520 Nm. Those figures allow it to complete the 0 to 100 km/h run in 4,5s, with top speed capped at 285 km/h.

Both versions feature a 48 V starter/generator that provides an extra 22 cv in certain driving situations.

The AMG Ride Control + suspension has also been refined. While it still relies on a multi-chamber air-suspension layout, it is now combined with electronically controlled, adjustable damping.

This damping system is entirely new and uses two pressure-limiting valves positioned outside the damper, enabling the damping force to be adjusted with even greater precision depending on the road surface and the selected driving mode.

As a result, the damping force at each wheel can be continuously varied so the car’s response is always optimised for the situation.

When does it arrive?

As mentioned above, sales of these two versions are scheduled for August, but Mercedes-AMG has not yet confirmed pricing for our market, nor has it shared any details about the V8-engined versions, which will be revealed later.
