Finn Thomasen, Ford’s communications manager in Europe, confirmed back in March that Focus production would come to an end in November this year - and that is exactly what happened.
Ford Focus production ends after 27 years
On 15 November, the blue oval built its last compact estate in Saarlouis, Germany, closing the chapter after 27 years, four generations and 12 million units sold.
Across those four generations, the Ford Focus was consistently praised for its driving dynamics - a benchmark for its class - whether in the more affordable versions or in the higher-performance models.
Interestingly, the ST variants never really established themselves in the market, yet the RS models - which underpinned many rally victories - were equally coveted and feared. The Focus’s finely tuned handling will undoubtedly be missed.
Strategic U-turn
The end of the Focus - like the equally iconic Fiesta in 2023 - is a direct consequence of Ford’s near-total push towards electrification in Europe. It is also a result of the European Union’s very ambitious targets to cut CO₂ emissions.
In the same segment as the Focus, the American brand now offers the electric Explorer and Capri, while the Kuga remains on sale (an SUV with petrol and hybrid options). The Puma, from the segment below, has been Ford’s best-selling model in Europe since the Fiesta left the line-up.
Electrification, however, has not delivered the commercial results Ford expected. In 2024, Ford’s first year in Europe without the Fiesta, sales fell by 17% (426 thousand units). This year, up to September, volumes have been steady (source: ACEA), but in 2026 - with the Focus also gone - sales could start falling again.
Filling the gap left by the Focus in Ford Europe
Ford’s decline in Europe started earlier: in 2015 it was the second best-selling brand, but by 2024 it had slipped to 12th place. Perhaps for that reason, it is no surprise that Ford has opted for a major rethink of its European strategy, aiming to return to a more prominent position.
Part of that plan will involve… filling the void left by the end of the Focus. In 2027, Ford will introduce a new crossover with petrol and hybrid versions. It is not yet clear whether it will replace the Kuga, but it will be built in the same plant, in Valencia, Spain. Will it be called Focus? We will have to wait and see.
Jim Baumbick will be central to meeting these new objectives. Previously responsible for the Focus and Kuga product lines, Baumbick has recently been appointed President of Ford Europe and now carries a major remit: “develop products that are relevant for European customers”, as stated in a press release.
He took up the role on 1 November and, for now, will be the public face of Ford Europe’s restructuring: cutting costs and jobs, and even shutting the factory where the Focus had been built until just a few days ago.
