BMW i3 confirmed: first all-electric 3 Series with 900 km range, 469 ch and 400 km in 10 minutes

BMW has now confirmed the new i3, its first fully electric BMW 3 Series. As the second model built on the Neue Klasse platform, it claims up to 900 km of range (WLTP, provisional figures), 469 ch of power, and the ability to add 400 km in just 10 minutes of charging. Production is scheduled to begin in Munich in August 2026, with first customer deliveries expected in autumn.

Highly anticipated, the BMW i3 arrives with a clear message: this is more than just another battery-electric car. BMW’s official announcement of the i3 is intended as a statement to the wider industry, suggesting the brand has taken onboard what buyers expect from a modern EV.

For years, the Bavarian group was often viewed as cautious-sometimes even hesitant-about the shift to electric, defending a multi-energy strategy that attracted as much praise as it did criticism. In the meantime, Tesla and Hyundai, along with Chinese brands such as BYD and Xpeng, captured momentum across Europe. To regain its edge, BMW set out its large-scale Neue Klasse plan, designed to electrify the brand’s full line-up.

After the iX3 and now the i3-and with Munich’s factory due to become fully electric by 2027-BMW is making its position unambiguous: the transition is under way.

The stakes could hardly be higher. The BMW 3 Series has long been one of the premium segment’s best-selling models worldwide. It underpins a significant share of the group’s investment capacity, anchors customer loyalty and shapes the brand’s image. Turning the 3 Series electric is therefore far more than a product launch: it is a strategic bet on whether BMW can persuade its own customer base-often ICE buyers for decades-to make the switch.

That bet is made tougher by a field of well-established rivals. The Tesla Model 3 still sets the benchmark for software and perceived value. Hyundai’s IONIQ 6 has rewritten expectations with standout efficiency. Polestar, Volvo, Mercedes with the EQE, and soon Porsche and Audi with their own PPE-based variants are all targeting the same type of buyer. And China’s push into Europe continues to intensify, despite customs barriers introduced by Brussels in 2024.

Against that backdrop, BMW needs heavyweight talking points. The good news is that the BMW i3 brings plenty to the table to help restore the brand’s standing.

Neue Klasse: the big reset for the BMW i3

With Neue Klasse, BMW is no longer simply swapping an ICE engine for an electric motor. The programme represents a clean-sheet rethink: a new electronic architecture, new batteries, a new operating system and new motors. Everything has been designed from the ground up around the constraints-and the advantages-of electric mobility.

At launch, the range will consist of a single version: the BMW i3 50 xDrive, featuring sixth-generation BMW eDrive technology. Unlike earlier iterations, it is built around an 800-volt architecture, enabling charging speeds that BMW positions as a major leap forward. The battery uses next-generation cylindrical cells (46 mm in diameter, 95 mm in height), which are said to be 20% more energy-dense than Gen5 prismatic cells.

A “cell-to-pack” layout removes intermediate modules, integrating cells directly into the battery pack to raise overall energy density and cut mass. More unusually, “pack-to-open-body” turns the battery into a structural chassis component: the battery lid effectively becomes the vehicle floor, reducing weight while lowering the centre of gravity.

Styling that reconnects with classic 3 Series DNA

Starting with what you notice first: the styling. The BMW i3 reinterprets the look of the i3 without overturning it. The body keeps BMW’s familiar 2.5-box proportions, with a long wheelbase (2 897 mm), short overhangs and a swept roofline. Up front, BMW refreshes its “four eyes” signature, blending the grille and twin headlamps into a single horizontal light graphic. Optional Iconic Glow adds three customisable lighting animations.

At launch, buyers will be able to choose from 11 paint finishes, including the exclusive M Le Castellet Blue. Inside, four themes are offered, ranging from recycled materials in the Essential specification through to BMW Individual Merino leather.

469 ch, two motors and all-wheel drive

Mechanically, the BMW i3 50 xDrive combines two different motor technologies. At the rear sits an electrically excited synchronous motor (EESM) developed specifically for the 800-volt system. Its magnetic field is dynamically controlled, allowing losses to be tuned to real-world load. At the front, BMW uses a compact asynchronous motor (ASM) made solely from aluminium and iron, avoiding permanent magnets and rare earth materials.

BMW claims this pairing cuts energy losses by 40% versus the previous generation, while reducing powertrain weight by 10% and manufacturing costs by 20%. Total system output is 345 kW, i.e. 469 ch, with peak torque of 645 Nm.

900 km of range!

BMW is also talking about a headline range figure of up to 900 kilometres on the WLTP cycle, representing a 30% improvement over Gen5 models. It is easily the most striking number in the announcement-and also the one that merits the most caution. The WLTP values are provisional, and real-world use (motorway driving, air conditioning, outside temperature and vehicle load) will inevitably differ.

Even so, allowing a 20–25% reduction would still suggest roughly 650–700 km in real conditions, which would be exceptional for a compact saloon.

From an industrial perspective, crossing the 900 km threshold also carries strong symbolic weight. It signals a step change in battery energy density and implies that range is no longer the primary barrier to buying a premium EV. Attention will naturally shift to other factors: price, long-term battery durability and the day-to-day charging experience.

Ultra-rapid charging

If it delivers on endurance, the BMW i3 is also positioned as a very fast-charging EV. BMW says the 800-volt architecture supports up to 400 kW DC charging-territory previously associated with cars like the Porsche Taycan or Hyundai IONIQ 6 GT. In practical terms, BMW’s promise is dramatic: up to 400 kilometres recovered in only 10 minutes, measured under ISO 12906 within the WLTP cycle.

On AC, the optional AC Pro specification increases capacity to 22 kW, effectively enabling a full overnight charge. And for drivers relying on 400 V DC chargers (still the vast majority of today’s public network), the BMW i3 includes an integrated switching matrix to maintain compatibility.

Battery thermal preparation runs automatically. When the driver sets a DC charger as a destination in BMW Maps, the car heats or cools the battery in advance to maximise charging speed on arrival. The charging flap also opens automatically, thanks to an AI system that recognises charging intent from the surrounding context.

BMW also builds all three bidirectional charging modes into the i3. Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) can power electrical devices directly from the battery (up to 3.7 kW). Vehicle-to-Home (V2H), paired with the BMW Wallbox Professional DC and a photovoltaic set-up, lets the car act as a household energy buffer, increasing solar self-consumption by up to 30 points.

Lastly, Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) is enabled through a partnership with E.ON: customers can sell energy back to the public grid, with monitoring available via the My BMW app. Availability depends on local market regulations.

This “vehicle-as-an-energy-service” direction is one of the most promising strategic themes in the next phase of the automotive industry, turning the car into a controllable energy asset-an especially persuasive selling point while electricity prices remain volatile and households look to optimise consumption.

Panoramic iDrive: a new cabin experience

Inside, the BMW i3 debuts Panoramic iDrive. Its centrepiece is BMW Panoramic Vision: an information projection stretching across the full width at the base of the windscreen. This panoramic display is complemented by a 17.9-inch central screen in Free-Cut Design (3 340 × 1 440 pixels, matrix backlighting), an optional 3D Head-Up Display, and a multifunction steering wheel using Shy Tech (buttons illuminate only when their related function is available).

BMW’s voice assistant now integrates Amazon’s Alexa+ technology, built on a large language model (LLM). The aim is far more natural dialogue without predefined commands, plus access to third-party services, real-time information sources and Amazon Music. Rollout is planned progressively from the second half of 2026, starting with Germany and the United States.

BMW Operating System X is based on the Android Open Source Project and supports OTA updates. Up to seven user profiles can be stored via BMW ID, with each person’s settings automatically saved.

Heart of Joy: assisted driving steps up

At the centre of the architecture, four high-performance “superbrains” share the workload. Heart of Joy is dedicated to driving dynamics, overseeing propulsion, braking, certain steering functions and energy recuperation. BMW says it reacts ten times faster than previous systems, delivering more precise and predictable responses through bends.

Braking is managed via Soft-Stop: in everyday driving, regenerative braking covers almost all deceleration, with friction brakes mainly reserved for sporty driving or emergency scenarios. Driver assistance reaches Level 2 under the BMW Symbiotic Drive name, with a notable characteristic: the system accepts driver inputs without automatically disengaging.

Built in Munich, deliveries in autumn

The BMW i3 will be assembled at BMW’s historic Munich plant. Production is due to start in August 2026, with first deliveries from autumn. One year later, the site is set to move to Neue Klasse EV-only output-an especially symbolic decision given Munich’s role as BMW’s birthplace. Pricing has not yet been disclosed.

Our analysis

On paper, the BMW i3 appears to tick every box-and then some. If the 900 km WLTP range and 400 kW charging capability are confirmed at final WLTP certification, BMW will have achieved a clear technical statement. The Neue Klasse platform looks like the result of years of serious development, visible across the vehicle: powertrain, interface, software architecture and bidirectional charging.

However, automotive history is full of excellent cars that failed to win over buyers. BMW still has to settle the pricing question, which was the glaring omission from the announcement. An electric 3 Series seen as out of reach could deter consumers, particularly long-standing ICE BMW customers who remain difficult to convert.

Charging infrastructure also remains pivotal. The full 400 kW rate is only available on high-power chargers that are still uncommon in Europe, even if deployment is accelerating. And Chinese competitors-now firmly part of the European conversation thanks to price-to-technology propositions that are hard to ignore-are unlikely to ease off.

The BMW i3 is an ambitious answer at a pivotal moment in the Bavarian brand’s story. What remains is to learn the price and to see how it drives on the road. We will be back soon with our first test drives.
