10 Used Electric Cars That Make Sense in Portugal

The market is shifting. Having an electric car on your driveway no longer means buying brand new, paying top money or relying on government incentives. The used electric car market has grown up: there’s more choice, prices are more reasonable, and many models have already demonstrated their reliability and efficiency over the years.

Because of that, there are now used EVs to suit nearly every taste and budget. You’ll find basic city cars, family SUVs, fast saloons and even sports models. They all share one thing: they cost less, yet they’re still entirely fit for everyday use.

This guide is designed to help you make sense of the used electric car landscape, highlighting 10 used electric models that make sense in Portugal - for range, reputation, servicing costs and, of course, price.

Every model in this list (in alphabetical order) was assessed based on what is genuinely available on the national market - particularly on piscapisca.pt - and on the accumulated real-world testing experience of Automotive Reason.

BMW i3: a different kind of premium city car

• Price: 11 000 € to 20 000 €
• Range: 190-310 km (WLTP)
• Battery type: NMC

Compact on the outside and unconventional on the inside, the BMW i3 opens the list - and it’s also the most distinctive. It introduced ideas that still feel forward-thinking today: a carbon-fibre structure, an upright driving position and impressive agility around town. Range varies by version, but it’s more than adequate for urban driving.

It’s an EV with personality and a level of quality that still feels current despite its age. Versions with the smaller battery (60 Ah) deliver only about 150 km of real-world range, although there are i3s with larger batteries and even an optional range extender.

Ride comfort could be better, but in most other respects it meets what you’d expect from a BMW. We found this BMW i3 with an 18-month warranty, 125 000 km, in the 94 Ah battery version for under 14 thousand euros.

Dacia Spring: the cheapest even when used

• Price: 10 000 € to 16 000 €
• Range: around 230 km (WLTP)
• Battery type: NMC

It isn’t fast and it isn’t plush - the Dacia Spring simply does the job. Sometimes that’s exactly what you need and nothing more. If that sounds like you, and you don’t want to worry every time a new scratch appears on the bodywork, this Romanian model could be your next EV.

It’s the lowest-priced electric car on sale in Portugal, both new and used. The Spring makes electric mobility attainable, and its small footprint suits city life or short trips. Used in that way, its range is more than enough.

Every version comes with air conditioning, but there aren’t many extras beyond that. We found this Dacia Spring for under 10 thousand euros, with just 70 thousand kilometres and an 18-month warranty. And speaking of "luxuries", this one even includes a rear parking camera.

Hyundai IONIQ 5: space and rapid charging

• Price: 23 000 € to 45 000 €
• Range: 384-481 km (WLTP)
• Battery type: NMC

The Hyundai IONIQ 5 has real presence in person. It’s larger than it looks in photos, but what really sets it apart is underneath: thanks to an 800 V architecture, it can charge very quickly and it also delivers a very roomy cabin.

Even examples with higher mileage remain a strong option for anyone wanting a modern, well-equipped electric SUV. Material quality is excellent and the equipment list is extensive. The brand’s track record for battery longevity is also a point in Hyundai’s favour.

We found this Hyundai IONIQ 5 with the larger battery, an 18-month warranty and 150 000 km for under 23 thousand euros.

Kia e-Niro: range, dependability and warranty

• Price: 20 000 € to 35 000 €
• Range: 289-455 km (WLTP)
• Battery type: NMC

You might look at the Kia e-Niro and not fall in love, but as the saying goes, "you can’t judge a book by its cover". With up to 455 km of WLTP range (in the latest versions) and a proven reliability record, the e-Niro is one of the most sensible used EVs you can buy.

It offers space, comfort and a good level of equipment, backed by Kia’s reputation for durability. There are examples with more than 300 thousand km showing virtually no battery degradation. Among used electric cars, it’s one of the most rational purchases.

We found this Kia e-Niro for under 18 500 euros, with warranty and 130 000 km. If you’d rather have lower mileage, there’s also this e-Niro with under 70 000 km.

Nissan Leaf: a family-friendly option for the city

• Price: 6000 € to 39 000 €
• Range: 175 km (NEDC)-385 km (WLTP)
• Battery: LMO (1st generation), NMC (2nd generation)

It’s already possible to pick up many first-generation Nissan Leaf examples for under 10 thousand euros - in many ways, the father of the modern EV - but if that range feels too limited, it’s worth considering the second generation.

The styling is more broadly appealing, but even if it still doesn’t win you over, the Leaf scores highly in day-to-day use thanks to its space, comfort and strong equipment availability.

The most common version is the 40 kWh, which is enough for nearly 280 km of city running. If you need to go further, there’s the 62 kWh option, which easily brings an extra 100 km… along with more performance (218 cv vs 150 cv).

That’s the sort of example we found: a 2023 Nissan Leaf e+ Tekna for 26 990 euros, with under 9500 kilometres. If you don’t require that much range, there are at least a dozen 2025 Leaf 40 kWh cars, essentially new (under 100 km), priced between 23 700 euros and close to 27 thousand euros.

Renault Zoe: a simple, effective city car

• Price: 10 000 € to 18 000 €
• Range: 200-395 km (WLTP)
• Battery type: NMC

The Renault Zoe remains a very strong entry point into electric motoring. Best suited to city driving or short commutes, it stands out for its accessible price, straightforward ownership experience and low maintenance costs.

Later versions with the 52 kWh battery make it possible to travel beyond the city with confidence. If you’re considering a Renault Zoe, pay close attention to battery ownership: some cars come with the battery leased from the manufacturer via a monthly fee.

We found this Renault Zoe (with the battery owned outright) for under 9000 euros, with warranty and under 100 000 km. For 11 thousand euros, we also found this version with a higher-capacity battery (300 km of range). There’s plenty of supply in the market.

Skoda Enyaq: the right electric SUV for families

• Price: 25 000 € to 43 000 €
• Range: 340-520 km (WLTP)
• Battery type: NMC

With generous space, strong equipment levels and above-average range, the Skoda Enyaq is a great family-focused SUV. Build quality is solid, comfort is better than average, and the MEB platform delivers a safe, predictable driving experience.

Despite the modern tech on board, its layout feels more traditional than many EVs. More conservative drivers will appreciate the presence of several physical buttons on the dashboard, along with other practical in-car solutions.

In the used electric car market, Skoda Enyaq prices are starting to look very appealing. For under 30 thousand euros and with under 30 thousand kilometres, we found this Skoda Enyaq for sale in Sportline trim.

Smart ForTwo EQ: tiny yet practical

• Price: 9000 € to 15 000 €
• Range: around 130 km (WLTP)
• Battery type: NMC

Made for the reality of city driving, the Smart Fortwo EQ is a two-seater EV that fits almost anywhere, uses very little energy and charges quickly (largely thanks to the small battery).

Range is modest, but it works well for everyday urban life. As a second car for someone who only needs two seats and stays within major cities, it makes a lot of sense. We found this electric Smart with low mileage for under 9000 euros.

Tesla Model 3: quick, efficient and affordable

• Price: 17 000 € to 40 000 €
• Range: 409-614 km (WLTP)
• Battery type: LFP (Standard Range) or NMC (Long Range/Performance)

Even as a used buy, the Tesla Model 3 remains one of the most rounded choices on the market. Long Range versions bring strong range and access to the Supercharger network, while the cheaper Standard Range is well suited to daily use.

Tesla continues to push remote software updates, helping the car feel up to date even after a few years. If performance and tech matter to you, it’s hard to beat at this price point. In build quality terms, there’s a substantial step forward with the newer Highland version.

The psychological 15-thousand-euro barrier is getting closer all the time. We found this Model 3 for sale with an 18-month warranty, priced at under 18 thousand euros.

Tesla Model Y: space and XXL range

• Price: 30 000 € to 45 000 €
• Range: 455-533 km (WLTP)
• Battery type: NMC

Building on the Model 3’s success, the Tesla Model Y adds extra room and flexibility. It’s quick, offers excellent range and benefits from Tesla’s charging network.

It’s one of the most complete electric SUVs you can buy, even second hand. It’s a shame the suspension isn’t particularly comfortable and that the turning circle isn’t smaller. If those two drawbacks were addressed, its popularity would likely be even higher.

Most used examples sit between 30 thousand euros and 40 thousand euros. In the case of this Tesla Model Y we found - a Long Range with dual motors - it has just over 90 thousand kilometres and costs 38 thousand euros, with an 18-month warranty.

Volkswagen ID.3: compact outside, roomy inside

• Price: 20 000 € to 35 000 €
• Range: 330-550 km (WLTP)
• Battery type: NMC

The Volkswagen ID.3 was conceived as an "electric Golf". It offers a spacious cabin, competitive range and confident road manners. Even higher-mileage cars have shown good battery durability.

The touch controls take some getting used to, but used prices have now dropped enough to make that easier to accept. Newer cars feature improved materials, but overall it delivers what you’d expect from a Volkswagen.
