Geely E2: the compact electric car set for Portugal in 2027

Geely is preparing its launch in Portugal with three models, yet the one most likely to make the biggest commercial splash will, in all probability, be the last to arrive. It is called the Geely E2, a compact electric car that debuted 14 months ago in China and quickly became an immediate hit.

Its sales record already comes with plenty of accolades. In 2025 it was the best-selling electric car in China and the second best-selling worldwide, while also taking global leadership in the compact electric segment.

There is still no fixed date for its arrival in our market, but current expectations point to 2027. When it lands, the E2 is expected to serve as Geely’s entry-level model in Portugal and will likely be the car that delivers the brand’s volume in the country.

Before that happens, we will first see the Geely E5 from May onwards: an electric SUV offering up to 430 km of range. It will be followed by another SUV, this time a plug-in hybrid, the Geely Starray EM-i, with a combined range (petrol and electric) of 1055 km.

The electric car that won over China

In Portugal it will be marketed as the Geely E2, a name used in some international markets. In China, however, the same model is known as the Geely Xingyuan. Elsewhere it also appears as the Geely EX2, but the fundamentals are identical: positioned in the B-segment, it is a five-door electric supermini with compact dimensions, an aggressive price point and a rational proposition designed for urban and extra-urban use.

As the world’s best-selling model in its segment in 2025, the E2 is not simply another low-cost Chinese EV heading for Europe. It has already cleared what is arguably the toughest test for any Chinese manufacturer: winning at home, in a domestic market where brands such as BYD, Chery, Leapmotor and SAIC compete fiercely on price, technology and launch tempo.

In Portugal, the challenge will be different. Price will remain crucial, but the brand will also need to earn the trust of Portuguese buyers. That effort will be supported by Salvador Caetano Auto’s network, which will act as Geely’s importer in Portugal.

Dimensions, range and motor

The Geely E2 is approximately 4.13 m long, 1.81 m wide and 1.57 m tall, with a 2.65 m wheelbase. These are classic B-segment supermini proportions, yet the width and wheelbase should help it make efficient use of interior space-something we were able to verify after a brief static and dynamic encounter in Hangzhou, China.

Power comes from a rear-mounted electric motor producing 85 kW, the equivalent of 116 hp, and 150 Nm of torque. The claimed 0–100 km/h time is 11.5 seconds, and top speed is limited to 130 km/h-figures aligned with predominantly urban and extra-urban driving.

The battery uses LFP chemistry, with a capacity of 39.4 kWh, and enables a range of up to 410 km on China’s CLTC cycle. This figure will differ under WLTP and could end up close to 350 km, but the homologation process has not yet been completed.

It also remains to be confirmed whether this will be exactly the specification chosen for Portugal, or whether Geely will revise the European line-up before the model reaches the market.

Small on the outside, practical on the inside

Despite its compact footprint, the Geely E2 focuses on everyday usability. The brand claims a 375-litre rear boot, which can expand to 1320 litres with the rear seats folded. On top of that, it adds a 70-litre front boot, a further 28-litre compartment beneath the rear seat, and 36 storage areas distributed throughout the cabin.

The Geely E2 can also be equipped with an electric tailgate-an unusual feature for B-segment electric cars, particularly if it is confirmed in Europe as one of the most affordable options in this class.

Inside, the headline feature is the 14.6-inch central infotainment display, supported by a digital instrument cluster and several in-cabin storage solutions.

Prices in Portugal

There are no Portuguese prices yet. In China, the Geely Xingyuan is priced at around 68,800 yuan, roughly €8,600 at the current exchange rate, but this is only a reference point. In Portugal, the price will inevitably be higher.

Even so, the Geely E2 is shaping up to be one of the cheapest electric cars in the segment when it reaches our market. The timeline still indicates 2027, after the brand’s first two models, and it will likely be at that point that Geely has its best opportunity to scale up in Portugal.

For a brand that is still unfamiliar to much of the Portuguese public, a compact electric car that is well equipped and competitively priced may matter more than any other model.
