Volkswagen T-Roc R returns in 2027 with 333 cv, built in Portugal

Ever-tougher emissions rules across Europe are still forcing many high-performance combustion models to disappear, but the next Volkswagen T-Roc will not be one of those casualties: a new T-Roc R is on the way.

The “R” badge will remain on the second-generation T-Roc, once again marking out the range-topping, most performance-focused version. Even in this first glimpse-still wearing heavy camouflage-it is hard to miss what it is: the four exhaust tailpipes and the prototype’s sharper, more assertive styling give the game away.

You’ll have to wait until 2027 to see it properly, but some key details are already confirmed: this will be the most powerful Volkswagen ever built in Portugal, produced at Autoeuropa.

The most powerful T-Roc ever

It will not only be the most powerful Volkswagen made in Portugal, but also the strongest T-Roc to date: 333 cv (with 420 Nm of torque), which is 33 cv more than before. Those figures match what you get in the Golf R.

Volkswagen T-Roc R powertrain, mild-hybrid and Euro 7

In fact, the T-Roc R is expected to adopt the hot hatch’s drivetrain-combining the 2.0 TSI (EA888) engine with a seven-speed DSG gearbox and four-wheel drive-while adding an important update: 48 V mild-hybrid electrical assistance. It is also set up to comply with the upcoming Euro 7 standard, which comes into force at the end of November 2026.

It should also feature the latest evolution of the 4Motion all-wheel-drive system with a multi-plate clutch. What remains unconfirmed is whether it will also gain the R Performance Torque Vectoring system fitted to the Golf R, which can direct all of the torque sent to the rear axle to a single wheel (the outside wheel in a corner).

Wheels and tyres

What we can verify-after seeing the camouflaged prototype in person in Palmela-is that the new T-Roc R will run 245 mm-wide tyres (+30 mm compared with before), wrapped around 20″ wheels.

More distinctive styling

Visually, Volkswagen wants to create a clearer separation between full R models and R-Line trim levels, as Stefan Wallburg, Volkswagen’s head of exterior design, told Autocar. As a result, expectations are for a more aggressive look than its predecessor.

Even through the camouflage, you can already make out bespoke front and rear bumpers and a more muscular overall stance.

Cabin details still under wraps

The interior is being kept secret for now, but Volkswagen has confirmed the new T-Roc R will feature R-specific graphics in the digital instrument display, plus other exclusive touches such as a new steering wheel and new front seats.

All that is left is to wait for the full reveal and the T-Roc R’s launch in 2027 (production is expected to begin in October that year), marking the most powerful Volkswagen ever built in Portugal.
