Records are made to be broken, and this one didn’t stand for long. The Chevrolet Corvette ZR1X has just become the fastest American car ever around the Nürburgring, posting a time of 6min49,275s.
That’s 2,8s quicker than the lap set roughly three months ago by the Ford Mustang GTD, which stopped the clocks at 6min52,072s. The Mustang GTD is an 800 hp “monster”, but the Corvette ZR1X raises the bar for “monstrosity” to a whole new level.
A new benchmark for the Chevrolet Corvette ZR1X at the Nürburgring
Starting from the Corvette ZR1 - hardly underpowered, with its 1078 hp twin-turbo V8 - the ZR1X adds an electrified front axle (borrowed from the E-Ray, the hybrid Corvette). That front motor contributes 138 kW (188 hp). The outcome is all-wheel drive and a combined peak output of 1267 hp.
Even as the most powerful Corvette ever built and - now - the quickest in the “Green Hell”, the lap time is unlikely to have rattled Stuttgart too much: the Porsche 911 GT3 RS, with just 525 hp, is slower, but by less than… a tenth of a second, recording 6min49,328s.
Power, weight and downforce: Corvette ZR1X versus its rivals
The 911 GT3 RS also carries a sizeable weight advantage - 1450 kg (DIN) versus an estimated 1860 kg for the Corvette ZR1X - and it’s a downforce machine, topping out at 860 kg. The ZR1X, when fitted with the ZTK package, produces 544 kg.
That weight discussion is reinforced by the 6min50,763s achieved by the Corvette ZR1 on the same day. It was about a second and a half slower, yet it runs rear-wheel drive only, gives away 188 hp, and is also around 115 kg lighter (estimated).

In the end, while the Corvette ZR1X delivered an outstanding time - dipping under seven minutes at the Nürburgring is undeniably a remarkable achievement - it still left a hint of untapped potential, underlining that it takes far more than sheer power to be truly fast in the “Green Hell”. Yes, I’m looking at you, Rimac Nevera…
And this story may not be over. Misha Charoudin, the well-known YouTuber and driver with extensive Nürburgring-Nordschleife experience, reviewed the Corvette ZR1 lap (not the ZR1X), because he believes it has greater potential as a track-focused car.
After a detailed video breakdown of the lap (you can watch it below), he came to a clear conclusion: the Corvette ZR1 could be 10 seconds quicker (roughly half a second per kilometre).
Crucially, he doesn’t “point the finger” at the car, but at the person behind the wheel, Brian Wallace - who is also a General Motors vehicle dynamics engineer. Wallace will know the car inside out - he was part of the development team, after all - but he isn’t a professional driver with deep experience of the German circuit, as Charoudin highlights.
In his analysis, Charoudin says the driver was cautious through many corners. He infers this from the way the Corvette ZR1 exits certain bends, failing to use the full width of the track, and also from the fact that some kerbs were avoided.
He also notes that the cornering speeds in a few sections are below what he has seen from 911 GT3 models… excluding the RS. And if the driver isn’t carrying as much speed as possible through the corners, it compromises almost everything that follows, including the speeds reached on the straights.
That is why Misha Charoudin argues there are still 10 seconds to be found. And could the same apply to the ZR1X?
If his assessment is right, the projected time would place the American supercar as the second-fastest production car on the circuit, beaten only by the AMG One. The ball is now in Chevrolet’s court: another attempt with professional drivers?
