Portugal is set to be one of the first three European markets to welcome GAC Aion, a new Chinese marque within the GAC Group. The other two launch countries are Poland and Finland, with sales due to begin later this month.
At the Munich Motor Show 2025, the brand unveiled the first two models of its European push: the Aion V and the Aion UT. The Aion V-a fully electric SUV-will be the first to arrive, while the Aion UT, a compact family car with MPV-like styling cues, is scheduled to follow in 2026.
GAC Aion V
The Aion V is 4605 mm long, 1876 mm wide and 1686 mm tall. With its size and positioning, it targets rivals such as the BYD Atto 3, the Renault Scenic and the Peugeot e-3008.
It is offered exclusively as an electric vehicle, using a front-mounted 150 kW (204 hp) motor. Power comes from a 75.3 kWh CATL LFP (lithium iron phosphate) battery, and the stated range is 521 km on the WLTP combined cycle.
GAC Aion UT
Smaller overall, the Aion UT measures 4270 mm in length, 1850 mm in width and 1575 mm in height. GAC positions it against cars such as the Volkswagen ID.3 and the MG4.
Like the Aion V, it is EV-only. It pairs a front 100 kW (136 hp) motor with a 60 kWh LFP battery, delivering a claimed range of up to 500 km (WLTP combined cycle).
Both models support AC charging at up to 11 kW and DC rapid charging at up to 180 kW, with a 10% to 80% charge quoted at just 24 minutes. Inside, they feature an 8.8” instrument display and a 14.6” central touchscreen.
“Estas modelos marcam o próximo passo no nosso objetivo de oferecer aos consumidores europeus opções sustentáveis e de alta qualidade”, the brand said in a statement.
When do they arrive?
The GAC Aion V goes on sale this month. Although Portugal is among the first markets to receive it-imports will be handled by Grupo JAP-there is still no word on the local line-up or pricing.
In Munich, a price of 37 thousand euros was mentioned, though this may differ by market. The Aion UT is expected in 2026 and could start at prices below 30 thousand euros.
What has already been confirmed is European production for both models. The Aion V and the Aion UT will be built at Magna Steyr’s facility in Graz, Austria, starting from next week.
Even though many components will be shipped from China, sources told Automotive News that the local assembly adds enough value for GAC to sidestep European tariffs applied to electric vehicles made in China.
More news
Beyond these two cars, the manufacturer also brought the HYPTEC HL to Munich-a SUV measuring more than five metres in length-which will be available either as a full EV or with a range extender.
GAC additionally showed the S7 plug-in hybrid SUV and the (huge) E9 MPV, also a plug-in hybrid. It remains to be seen whether any of these models will be launched in Europe.
