Although the camouflage has not completely gone away, these are the first production-spec units of the new Renault 5 electric.
They were assembled at the French manufacturer’s Technocentre, where the final details of the production processes are being signed off ahead of the model being built at the Douai plant, where the Renault 5 will actually be manufactured.
In this way, Renault says it can guarantee the desired quality standards from the very first cars produced.
The first “series” Renault 5
The big advantage is that pre-production vehicles now exist that are identical in every respect to the cars that will go on sale-allowing us to uncover more details about the upcoming Renault 5.
It is true they are still wearing camouflage, but we can already see how they differ from the 2021 5 Prototype.
All told, more than 60 units will be built at Renault’s Technocentre, each destined for a wide range of tests, both static and dynamic.
These are the cars that later show up in the familiar spy shots, as they are evaluated in every kind of setting, from everyday conditions to the most extreme scenarios.
If any tweaks of any kind are needed, the fact that the Technocentre works directly with the new Renault 5 development team helps ensure those changes are made before full series production begins.
What do we already know?
In short, the French brand’s new 100% electric model will be based on the CMF-B EV platform, derived from the CMF-B architecture used for internal-combustion models.
This route was chosen to bring development and manufacturing costs down, which are expected to be around 30% lower than those of the Zoe, the model it will replace.
Because of that, the anticipated starting price for the entry-level version of the new Renault 5 electric will be in the region of 25 thousand euros.
From the information already available, the new Renault 5 is expected to offer 125 hp and 150 hp. Two batteries will be offered, with capacities of 42 kWh and 52 kWh. As for range, figures point to 420 km with the larger option.
The biggest surprise-and also one of the most eagerly awaited-will be the Alpine version, called A290, intended as a fresh take on the French hot hatch.
The prototype has already been revealed, and we have already been to see it:
When will the Renault 5 be unveiled?
There is still no official date for the global unveiling of the new Renault 5 electric, but we believe it could happen later this year.
Even though there will not be a Paris Motor Show this year-which would have been the perfect moment-Renault has already announced that this model arrives in 2024. For now, we simply have to wait.
