Two European fighters, two distinct approaches to air combat, and one awkward dilemma for smaller air forces trying to plan for what comes next.
With war back on European soil and defence spending rising, choosing between France’s Dassault Rafale and Sweden’s Saab Gripen E is no longer just a question of specifications. It is a long-term strategic signal about how a nation expects to fight, what it can afford, and how closely it intends to align with partners over the next thirty years.
Two fighters, two visions of air war
The Rafale was designed as a national, do-everything aircraft. France set out to field a single jet capable of everything from within-visual-range fights to deep strike missions and nuclear deterrence. That intent is reflected in the platform’s architecture, from its high-thrust twin-engine configuration to the way its sensors and systems are integrated.
Saab took a different route, shaping the Gripen E into a “smart fighter” aimed at air forces that prioritise survivability and affordability over outright heft. The design is rooted in Swedish planning for conflict against a larger neighbour, including the assumption that air bases could be struck early by missiles.

Rafale: the omnirôle heavyweight
French officials tend to call the Rafale “omnirole” rather than simply multirole, and the distinction is deliberate. In practice, it points to a single aircraft being able to change tasks within one sortie: for example, conducting air defence over friendly territory and then carrying out a precision strike shortly afterwards, or switching from maritime patrol to close air support.
The mission with the highest political sensitivity is nuclear delivery. Rafale is able to carry the ASMPA-R cruise missile, which flies at roughly Mach 2 and is credited with a range of more than 500 km. In late 2025, the French Navy’s Rafale Marine gained this capability, tying the aircraft even more tightly to the centre of France’s nuclear deterrent.
Because of that role, France places a premium on end-to-end control: software, weapons integration, and electronic warfare are all kept under national authority. That emphasis also makes Rafale appealing to buyers who value strategic independence almost as much as peak performance.
Gripen E: built to scatter and survive
Gripen E’s lineage runs through Sweden’s Cold War BAS-90 doctrine. The premise was stark: expect major air bases to be hit quickly, so train to fly from short sections of roadway with minimal support, and keep relocating.
That logic remains central to the Gripen E. The aircraft can operate from a 500-metre strip of road, then be refuelled and re-armed in around ten minutes by a team of only six people before flying again. In a high-intensity war, that makes it far harder to track and destroy.

For smaller NATO air forces close to Russia’s borders-or for countries with limited airfield infrastructure seeking credible air defence-this dispersal model is particularly attractive.
Price tags and the real cost of flying
The headline purchase figure is never the full story, but it is often where parliamentary debates begin. A “bare” Rafale airframe is commonly placed at around €70 million to €100 million. Once weapons, training, spares, and long-term support are included, export packages rise substantially.

Gripen E is pitched with a lower entry cost. Its airframe is typically estimated at about €60 million to €70 million. Colombia’s recent package for 17 aircraft was valued at €3.1 billion, which works out at roughly €182 million per jet once weapons and support were counted.
Where Saab presses hardest is the cost of operation. It advertises an hourly flying cost of roughly €4,000 to €8,000-around half of the frequently cited €16,000 per flight hour for Rafale.
- Rafale: more expensive to acquire and operate, but able to carry heavier loads and fly longer sorties.
- Gripen E: lower cost per hour, fitting air forces that need to fly often without exhausting budgets.
For air forces in Latin America or South-East Asia dealing with tight finances and long-term currency exposure, saving money for every hour in the air can matter as much as performance figures in a sales presentation.
Payload, range and electronic warfare
Rafale: carrying more, staying longer
By the numbers, Rafale leads on payload and persistence. It can carry up to around 9.5 tonnes of fuel and weapons across 14 hardpoints under the wings and fuselage. With three external fuel tanks, it is often credited with a combat radius of about 1,300 to 1,700 km, and in a patrol profile it can remain on station for more than three hours.
Those extra margins translate into planning flexibility. A single Rafale can combine air-to-air missiles, precision-guided munitions and a targeting pod on the same mission. That can reduce the number of aircraft needed for complex tasking-an important advantage for states intending to project power at distance.
Gripen E: leaner but digitally ambitious
As a lighter, single-engine fighter, Gripen E accepts a lower ceiling for weapons and stores. It can carry about 5 tonnes across ten hardpoints, and its combat radius is commonly quoted between 800 and 1,500 km depending on loadout. In broadly comparable conditions, endurance is usually around an hour and a quarter.
Saab’s answer is to emphasise sensor fusion and electronic warfare performance. The ES-05 Raven radar offers a wide 200° azimuth field of regard thanks to a mechanically swivelling array, extending the surveillance arc. The MFS-EWS electronic warfare suite blends active jamming with passive sensors into a 360° protective “bubble”, intended to mislead hostile radars and inbound missiles.

Gripen E also integrates the Skyward-G infrared search and track (IRST) system, which detects aircraft passively via heat signatures-useful against targets trying to reduce radar visibility.
Rafale’s evolving avionics
Rafale’s own sensor and self-protection suite is highly capable. The RBE2 AESA radar can search to roughly 70° off-boresight, and its range is often cited at around 150 km against fighter-sized aircraft. SPECTRA, the electronic warfare system, provides 360° coverage around the airframe and can locate threats with high precision.
The F4 standard upgrades add a helmet-mounted display, stronger tactical data links, GaN-based antennas, SATCOM connectivity, and AI-assisted functions within the TALIOS targeting pod. The intention is to keep Rafale competitive into the 2040s as stealthier and more complex threats become widespread.
Export trajectories: big numbers vs targeted pushes
In export terms, Rafale currently has the stronger momentum. In 2025 it logged 26 deliveries in a single year, including 15 to overseas customers, while building a backlog of about 220 aircraft-roughly 175 of them for export.
Its customer list now includes Egypt, Qatar, Greece, India, the UAE, Indonesia and Serbia. A letter of intent with Ukraine even refers to a potential order in the triple digits, although any agreement will depend on financing and how the war develops.

Saab’s export path is more constrained. Sweden took delivery of its first Gripen E in late 2025. Brazil, the main international partner, has started inducting the type but has only received a fraction of its 36 aircraft so far, amid changing defence priorities in Brasília.
New sales to Colombia and signs of interest from countries such as Thailand keep production viable. Sweden has allocated additional public funding to sustain manufacturing and development, whilst Saab continues to pitch Canada and other prospects with offers that can include domestic assembly and industrial participation.
Sovereignty vs collective efficiency
Rafale often attracts governments seeking maximum control over their defence posture. Buying French typically provides access to an integrated ecosystem of missiles, pods and training, plus scope for national tailoring where the buyer has the finances and political leverage to request it.
For these customers, the higher bill is presented as the cost of sovereignty: domestic employment, technology transfer, reduced exposure to US export controls, and reassurance that Paris can act independently if alliances falter.
Gripen E, by contrast, is commonly marketed to states that put interoperability and tight cost control at the heart of defence planning. Integration with NATO data links, logistics designed around rapid road-based operations, and lower fuel and maintenance costs align well with air forces that expect to operate alongside larger allies rather than in place of them.
How a medium-sized air force might decide
Consider a European state with a strained defence budget and a tense frontier. Decision-makers may be forced to choose between a smaller number of Rafales or a larger fleet of Gripen Es for broadly similar overall programme costs.
Opting for Rafale produces a smaller force with greater strike weight, capable of deep missions and heavy loads in coalition campaigns. Choosing Gripen E may allow more aircraft, spread across rural road networks and therefore harder to eliminate in an opening missile barrage.
Either path can be defensible. In practice, outcomes often hinge on politics, industrial offsets, and how much the country expects its air force to operate alone if the worst happens.
Key terms that shape the debate
Several technical ideas sit at the centre of this comparison:
- Combat radius: how far an aircraft can fly from base, execute a mission, and return without refuelling. Greater radius supports deep strike and distant patrol missions.
- Electronic warfare: the methods used to detect, jam or deceive enemy radars and missiles. In modern air combat, this can matter as much as speed or manoeuvrability.
- Dispersed operations: spreading aircraft across multiple small sites rather than relying on a few large bases, complicating enemy targeting and keeping sorties flowing after the first attacks.
As drone swarms, long-range missiles and cyber attacks proliferate, these details are moving from technical footnotes into the centre of force planning. Whether air forces favour Rafale’s model of concentrated, high-end capability or Gripen E’s approach to agile, distributed resilience will shape how Europe fights-and funds-air power for decades.
